“Beware if you have to cancel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2008

We made a reservation for this bed and breakfast in May for a visit in early July. In mid-June, my chronic back problem necessitated immediate surgery for a herniated disc. This meant we had to cancel our entire Oregon vacation, including the stay in Ashland. I called two weeks prior to the date of our reservation, and was told by the woman who answered their phone that yes, there was a 60-day cancellation policy (by the way, such a policy is extremely unusual), but since this was the busiest season of the year, we would no doubt receive a refund if they could rent the room. Some weeks later, I checked my credit card for a refund, and not seeing one, I decided to call them. I was told by an employee (not the owner) that the books showed that they had received no cancellation notice from me, but he took down my phone number and assured me that the owner would call me. This call never happened. If you are an investment banker or neurosurgeon, losing $165 in deposit may be noise level for you. For us, it is not.

My husband and I stayed at this charming bed and breakfast on September 29th for a weekend getaway last minute, to see a play at the Shakespeare festival. We loved the room, upper suite was a cozy hideaway with a balcony overlooking the mountains and a large jacuzzi tub. The linens were sooo soft and the bed and pillows (there were tons of pillows) very comfortable.
We loved being able to go over to the main house to get fresh chocolate chip cookies and hot fresh coffee....very good coffee in fact! There was a nice turn down service that included chocolate truffles on the pillows. lots of little amenities including shampoo, razor, toothbrush, make-up remover and 2 kinds of soaps, and even the toilet paper dispenser was decorated with a paper rose, not just the "folded into a point" thing.
The grounds were lovely, a koi pond and large porch and garden. The room was spotless when we arrived, there were plenty of games and magazines and books in the room, and a comfortable couch and set of table and chairs, mini fridge, tv, nice gas fireplace. It was like being in a treehouse and the headboard added to this effect. Parking was very close to our room but we never heard a car.
The Cowslip Belle is about 3 blocks from the main hub of Ashland which includes Lithia Park, the Shakespeare Festival buildings and many of the shops and restaurants, including those along the creek.
Breakfast was delicious, with fresh fruit, muffins, coffee, orange juice, sausages, and a wonderful french toast with blueberries. It was the best french toast I have had, actually. We would definately stay there again. The host/owner is very nice, even offered to lend us coats to wear to the play as the weather was a little cold that day.

  • Liked — Relaxing with the warm pampered feeling of comforts and of having our privacy unless we wanted to socialize
