“A throwback!”
Reviewed 11 August 2014 via mobile

I had read some reviews of this place, and made the time to stop in for breakfast on a long drive from Toronto to DC. So glad I did. Tom and Joe's is a classic diner-style restaurant serving American classics. While it is showing its age, it is comfortable, clean and friendly. Food is great, and plentiful, and the staff have some real characters. Wish there were more places like this left.

“An Altoona Gem!”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

You can't beat their menu, it has a little bit of everything for everyone. Burgers are fantastic, handmade and not frozen. Steak sandwiches with REAL steak and bread that's soft and fresh. Service was also really good, there's a lot of traffic through the place and they keep things moving. We've never been for breakfast, but after looking at what they're offering, it won't be long until we make it back there. This is NOT chain food, this is real food that you'd make in your own kitchen. We love it!!

“An Altoona Institution”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Average overall, if you're expecting something extra special....don't. Variety and quality is good for the money, simple fare for the most part. The place gets pretty busy so take that for what it's worth. Limited free parking immediately behind the restaurant. Go, eat, have fun. They've been around a long time.

“It's Not a Diner, It's a Dump”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

This place was touted as a diner with nostalgic atmosphere. The linoleum was cracked and the decor was a mishmash from different eras. They need to put some money into the building or close down. The food was passable, but the cream of tomato soup my husband ordered had little clots of milk - obviously, they must have allowed it to boil. Prices were low, but high for the quality.
We like diners and home cooking, but this was more like an old coffee shop adjacent to a bus station in a town where all the factories have closed.

“A breakfast foodie's paradise!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

On a short stay in Altoona to see the HORSESHOE CURVE railroad track, my wife and I went to Tom & Joe's for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were in our small RV so we had to park about two blocks away - but it was worth it!

Wife had two eggs over easy, potatoes, wheat toast, and decaf coffee. I went for the unknown! The GREEK OMELET! Hey, when in Rome...
Both were served in fast food time and still steaming! Coffee was hot and tasted freshly brewed. Wife's was good, she said. My GREEK OMELET was a plethora of tastes and textures! The spinach was just wilted enough that it was not crunchy yet full of fresh taste. The cheese was full bodied in flavor and aroma! It was a great eat! The side of potatoes were equally tasty.

Cannot wait to go again!
