“One of a kind city experience”

Hopelands Gardens is a beautiful display of beautiful trees and landscaping on the remains of an old estate. The city has made many enhancements and particularly at Christmas time the display of lights is beautiful

“Beautiful, a must see”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Lived in Aiken for several years and spent many times going to Hopeland Gardens. A great place to just walk around and enjoy the gardens, take photo's, sit and read, have a picnic, enjoy the concerts that they have in the summer months. Also, please take a look at the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame while there. Aiken, after all is a big horse community.

“So Beautiful, So Peaceful”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

I grew up down the street from Hopelands and used to hop the wall with my brother in the 50s & 60s when it was still a private residence. Mrs. Hope Goddard Iselin was a serious amateur botanist and a world traveler who brought trees back from around the world to plant at Hopelands in beautiful Aiken, S.C., while her husband was skippering two America's Cup yachts to victory. When she died at 102 in the early 70s she deeded it to the city to be used as a public garden without charge. Most of the time you'll have it to yourself but you might share it with a wedding party, laughing children or young lovers holding hands and strolling through the deodora cedars. When her best friend and neighbor, Dorothy Rogers (a Goodyear) died a few years later, she added her adjoining Rye Patch to the city park, with it's multi-room 'cottage,' carriage house, stable, rose garden and much more. The people of Aiken are so fortunate to have these and so many other treasures left to them from the children of the founders of the Industrial Revolution who built them all for fun over 100 years ago.

Visting Hopeland Gardens should be on everyone's Aiken "to-do" list. It's so tranquil and beautiful. Take a few minutes and pop into the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame while you're there!
