Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Visitors Center, located on the first floor of the rebuilt Aiken Railroad Depot, can assist you with any questions you may have, contains maps and brochures of the area, a calendar of events and more. The Train Museum, located on the second floor, has nine dioramas that depict the towns, as they were in 1916, along the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company right of way. This railroad became the first designed steam powered commercial railroad in the US and the longest railroad in the world. These dioramas are done in the familiar HO scale and are complimented by interactive displays depicting railroad history. The Aiken Trolley Tour also departs from this location every Saturday at 10 am. Private trolley tours for groups of 15 or more may be available upon request.

“A Definite Must-See”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

For train lovers, this is definitely a must see. The building is a replica of the train station from 1899 and is beautiful in architecture and detail. Inside there are dioramas and a model train that travels through each scene, there's historical information regarding the train that came through Aiken back in 1833, and there are helpful docents who can recommend eateries, motels, and things to do while in Aiken along with all sorts of pamphlets and handouts. This is a "first stop" must-do in Aiken.

“Great history and introduction to Aiken SC”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

Visitor center has a wealth of information on Aiken and surrounding communities and a train museum.
The train museum has nine dioramas that depicts the towns in the south. We found it very interesting to learn how the railroad played a big roll in the community and peoples lives.
We recommend this highly to tourists and visitors. Young children would like it too.

“Bluebird enthusiasts take the trolley tour of Aiken.”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

The trolley picked us up at the Hilton Garden Inn in the morning at 9:00 A.M. for our two-hour group tour of Aiken on Thursday, October 3, 2013. We had an informative guide who commented about what we were seeing throughout the trip. Our only stop was a guided walk through Hopelands Gardens. The Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame & Museum located in the Gardens was closed. We viewed the Live Oak Canopy on South Boundary from our windows on the trolley. We saw from the rolling trolley historic homes and churches, Hitchcock Woods, and the equestrian sites (stables, polo fields, race track and the steeplechase course). The trolley tour was educational and gave me a broader perspective of historic Aiken.
