“Great food, but a bit pricey”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

My husband and I both had fish, and it was beautifully prepared and very moist. There was a wonderful puréed vegetable (pumpkin I think), which was delicious. We had a new waiter, who did a marvelous job.
Great atmosphere and ambiance. The restaurant is a bit pricey, but it is worth it.

“Almost perfect”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

We went here for both lunch and dinner. Food both times was very good. Just lacked a bit in presentation, especially for the price. But that is a personal feeling. The atmosphere is very good. The servers are very good and the food is very good to excellent. Consider it to be among the very best in Aiken. There is also a very nice bar in the historic lobby. Servers there also very good. It does get crowded on piano nights or when a group is booked in the hotel. Would absolutely return.

“Old South atmosphere with imaginative and thoughtful menu choices”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

Visiting Aiken, SC during the North America Bluebird Conference was a treat for this northerner, especially when we had the opportunity to meet family and friends for dinner at the Willcox Hotel. Coming from pretentiously farm-to-table Hudson, NY, expectations were not high, but I was pleasantly surprised at the varied menu which unexpectedly included a few decent vegan and gluten-free options. Appetizers included a nice selection of cheeses, and fresh, creatively prepared salads. A seasonal tomato basil soup was excellent. The GF Risotto entree with mushrooms and swiss chard was creamy and delicious. The fish of the day was an excellent pan-seared trout and the salmon with goat cheese and chorizo ravioli got a thumbs-up. However, all of the entrees should have included seasonal vegetables. The dessert choices were limited, which was disappointing; the one flavor of homemade ice cream offered was bland (how does that happen???), but the fried apple miso pies and the restaurant's signature chocolate marquise were both excellent. Service was friendly and accommodating. The Willcox Restaurant is worth trying again.

“Pleasant place for appetizers during happy hour.”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

Had a pleasant hour around happy hour last Wednesday evening with members of The National Bluebird Society at pool side for appetizers. There were probably twenty persons in our group. It was a wonderful setting to chat while enjoying the cold heavy hors d'oeuvres (Boccocini, prosciutto tartlets, smoked salmon, calves liver patte, salami accompanied with a selection of crackers and flatbreads) and a drink from the cash bar. Although I did not have dinner in the restaurant if items on the menu are as delicious as those appetizers than that’s all the reason I need to go back for Sunday brunch or dinner. The Willcox is a historic boutique hotel and the restaurant complements the ambiance and character of the property which is located just a few blocks from downtown. It is a unique place worth the trip for the great service, good food, and time tripping back to a swank historical setting.

“Inconsistent, salty and cheap”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

Menu changes frequently and what's good often goes. I use too much salt at home but found many items here overloaded with salt. Kitchen can take a long time when busy. Menu never has a particular theme and is really all over the place. I make better pasta at home. Egg dishes often over cooked for brunch i.e, browned. They serve bread with lunch but not brunch forcing you to order toast as extra which may be very small slice(s). Soups are designed to be not filling so you order more.(I call these poverty soups since there is more chicken in 1/2 a Campbell's can.) In fact a lot there is designed to have you order more and if you realize too late it could take forever to get it..not a good experience...Never liked any of the beef there.. other Restaurants in Aiken using local beef - much better.. Overall, I don't recommend it..needs an overhaul for good simple rustic cuisine such as Gordon Ramsey would makeover.
