We liked the location in Alpine for the ease of driving to tourist locations within 50 miles.
Penny's Diner is good and we enjoyed the flexibility of the breakfast/ meal voucher.
The first room we were given had some faults but the handyman attended and gave us a satisfactory room. The hotel was easy to find and parking no problem.
On our tour, we even recommended it to other tourists that we met.
A tip though, if you want a quiet room, take one well back from the road.

Planned 3 nights to tour area of Big Bend and environs, stayed 4.
Beds were comfortable, service was friendly and helpful (had minor car problems).
Food at the dinner had great serving sizes and was tasty. Would return in a heartbeat.

We stayed here for one night in summer 2009 on our way crossing the US. We looked for something affordable and safe.
There's not many options in town. Other Motels charged more for their stay (next door Holiday Inn asked 99$), so we chose this place. The first floor is reserved only for employees of the train company. But because of that fact, it is a really quiet place. So we got a ground floor room... but they are all inside rooms, so no access from outside, which made us feel safe.
The room itself came at a very basic standard. King-sized bed, comfy.... and a TV. Some small table, chair and an extra seat. No fridge, no microwave...It really was basic. But clean enough and was ok for one night. And it costed us almost 40$ less than the Hotel next door (we did have a coupon). So if you don't expect much and just need a bed.....this place is ok, and it safes some money.

This is one in a chain of hotels located at crew change points on the Union Pacific Railroad. Because train crews sleep at all times, these hotels have special sound insulation and are known to be quiet. Top floor is reserved for train crews. We never heard a peep out of any of the other guests.

But, it is a bare-bones hotel that was $10/night more ($89 w/taxes) than the very, very excellent Best Western next door. Nothing to write home about here: The only amenities are a weight room and big-screen TV room. Worst of all, the wireless Internet was out of service during our stay, causing us to cruise town twice a day to find wireless hotspots (tip: you can get free wifi at the library at Sul Ross State University).

Other than the quiet, the best part of this hotel is the fact that you get $7.75/person in breakfast credit at the adjacent diner. They did a good job on breakfast eggs, and offered reasonable service.

Our suggestion is to go with the Best Western Alpine next door.

Pleasant surprise to stay at affordable($54 Fri./Sat.) hotel in Touristy Alpine.
There was abosolutely quiet and it seemed if hotel was empty of any other guests. Rooms were loaded with amenities plus the cleanliness was incredible. $5.50 Breakfast voucher is given to each guest that can be redeemed at the nice diner next door. If you are looking for quiet setting and want to save $20 compared to the Best Western or Ramada then this is the place.

The Oak Tree Inn is a mid range motel (I paid just over $60), and its real good value for that price. Its very well equipped with an outdoor spa tub, a TV room, Exercise room and a 24 hour diner in the parking lot. All the rooms have a kitchen corner, and you sleep real well because it has air-con, double glazing for silence and completely dark shades if you need them.In summary, I have stayed in a lot of motels in Texas where the staff were stupid or rude and the prices were high, but this was a nice surprise.
