“Unsafe Hotel”
Reviewed 15 October 2010

We stayed in room 104 and found that the electrical system to be unsafe: The wall outlet near the front door wouldn't hold a plug; the outlet by the sink was loose in the wall, so when you removed your plug, the outlet came out of the wall about 1/4-3/8"; the light switches in the bathroom were located too close to a water source and would not pass electrical code; there were no bulb covers on the ceiling fixtures in the bathroom; and the heating lamp timer switch was without a cover, another violation of electrical code. It is also my bet that there are no ground fault circuit breakers in the hotel. So, electrical shock or worse could happen. Also, they advertise internet, there is none. No coat rack, and our room was terrible.

Stayed one night in an upstairs room. Rained. No shelter on the stairs from the rain.
Room very dark, rough cut timber everywhere, no curtains only rough sawn interior shutters. Very basic bathroom & shower, sprayed water everywhere.

We couldn't believe this place when we drove up. It had been booked for us as part of our Route 66 tour, and having read about it beforehand we couldn't wait to see what it was like. Big, bold and brash are words that immediately spring to mind. The rooms themselves are OK - nothing special, but I've definitely stayed in worse. Shower was OK and the bathroom was cordoned off with saloon style doors. There was a good flat screen TV and the beds were comfy. The main thing was the room ws clean. Everything was based around a wild west theme. It was the outside of this place that really blew us away, though. It was so colourful and built like an old wild west town.

Although we come from England and obviously didn't have our dog with us, it was doggie friendly with a doggie corral, which I thought was a really nice touch. Anywhere thats doggie friendly gets a big thumbs up from me.

What really makes this place special though, is the adjacent Big Steak Ranch. It was very busy and we had to wait a while for a table but the wait was well worth it. The steaks were amazing. Our server, Blake, was brilliant and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We were lucky enough to be sitting close to the table where there were several people trying to get through their 72oz steaks - great fun!!

Beautiful old west style hotel. Big and comfortable rooms, a lot of facilities and a swimming pool with the shape of Texas. Moreover, you are close to the Big Texan Ranch, worlwide famous for the 72 oz steak!

This is the kind of place I would have hounded my parents to death about staying in, decades ago. And, to my surprise, the room lived up to my 9 year-old self's hopes & dreams. It's pet friendly--it even has an enclosed doggie corrall--and located right newxt door to the Steak Ranch. The Texas-shaped pool is great, btw. And was sparkling clean when we stayed there. They also have a horse motel in the back of the property.

This has to be the most unhappiest staff we have ever come across. They don't give a rat's rear if you enjoy your stay here or not. You would think that this is such a tourist attraction with so many visitors wanting to get the experience then they would give you a big friendly Texas attitude- but no. Our room was dirty, nasty dark stains all over the pink carpet, the seal under the door was gone, so copius amound of crickets and sunlight poured in. The TV only broadcasted in red color and could not change it. When we told the front desk, they said "sorry we have nothing available to change you to" (This was a Monday Night) Not to mention, everywhere you turn, there are Nasty signs posted all over the room and bathroom saying inventory will be kept daily of towels and items in your room and if any are damaged, stolen or soiled it will be charged to your credit card- HOW RELAXING! I will not stay here ever again, for 90 bucks you can go somewhere nicer!

We thought this would be a quirky stop on our journey along Route 66 and we were right. We splashed out on the honeymoon suite as it was our honeymoon (it still wasn't very expensive). I spoke to Holly on the phone to book it and she was very friendly and helpful. When we arrived the staff were very friendly and asking to see photos of our wedding. The honeymoon suite was great. Nice and big and the bed was so high that it actually had steps to get up to it! And right in front of the bed was a couch/sofa made from cowskin and bull horns. It's a stone's throw 30 second walk away from the Steak Ranch so it is a perfect place to stay if you're driving through Amarillo and want some fun.
