My husband and I came in town to visit friends and we stayed here for two nights. It is clean and has everything you need BUT no extras. It is a great location for South Congress and we loved that we walked everywhere. Again - this isn't a luxury place - just a place that is cheap and clean.

Stayed for 1 night in June - 4 of us in 2 rooms. Loved that you can choose the room based on photos online. Comfortable enough for the night and a real retro feel. Not masses of storage but we didn't need it. Gorgeous pool :) Good location for South Congress or walkable to the South Congress Bridge to see the bats fly or 6th Street and the Capital. Quiet room even with the proximity of South Congress - we were in the single-floor block at the back.. Amy's Ice creams opposite is must to visit! Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms furthest from the road are quieter obviously.

Stayed here recently for 2 nights. It's in a great location and the room was pleasant enough although pretty basic & minute bathroom etc. a couple of bottles of complimentary water wouldn't have gone amiss considering the blazing outdoor temperatures!
Have to say that the staff on the whole were not overly friendly or helpful. When asked about the location of somewhere we wanted to go, one staff member basically told us he didn't go over the river & so didn't know the area downtown..???!! In fairness, he did look up another place we wanted to go but wasn't exactly over helpful or gracious about it. Asking for info was met with a kind of grudging response. The day we were leaving we'd checked out and asked if we could use a bathroom before getting our taxi and were told, no. So we had to go back up the street to a nearby cafe and use that. After spending 2 nights and not an inconsiderable amount of money in the motel! Don't know if I'd stay again. Has to be friendlier places in Austin. ;/.

First off, if you're looking for a 5 star experience, stay at some chain that you're comfortable with. But if you like personality, charm, good hospitality, perfect location and ease-of-access, this is the place for you to stay.
My Mom and I stayed here for her birthday (July 12) and we've stayed here previously... and will stay here again (provided they have availability when I call).

There's a ton of parking, safe location, middle of Congress with a gorgeous view of the capitol.
It's quiet, calm and clean, and we felt totally safe walking around there at night. Other guests were quiet and respectful, as well.

Also, the pool is amazing. Worth hanging out during the heat of the summer before heading out for the evening.

Note: It's a motel... and it is an older place. The AC might leak, the doors might stick a bit, and there may be chipped paint. But the rooms are clean, the staff is friendly and accommodating, and the location is superb.

My colleagues and I stayed at the Austin Motel while we were in town for a few meetings. My room was generally clean and appointed as you would expect for a vintage motel. My only complaint is the lack of black-out curtains to block the bright parking lot lights. If you need it to be totally dark to sleep you would be out of luck.
The neighborhood is cool with lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance.

I have stayed at the Austin Motel several times, each in different rooms. It is more personal than a chain and has much more history and character. Some rooms are nicer than others. Some could use updating. All were clean and liveable. They rooms are not cheap, but all places on South Congress have gotten pricy. The location is the great thing about the Austin Motel. There are great eats, music and interesting shopping all within walking distance. I look forward to staying there again soon.

Room Tip: Larger rooms are in the original, lower building, which is closer to the office. You can check out...

I just spent 5 days with my husband and son at the Austin Motel. I had read the reviews so I knew it would not be a 5 star hotel. It was clean and the staff was helpful. Each room seemed to have a different decor and some more up to date than others. We stayed in the back building with 2 double beds. Small bathroom with shower and toilet and sink outside. Beds comfortable, but furniture was older. The room 2 doors away seemed to be under renovations. The website shows the inside of the rooms to get a better idea. There is 3 different buildings with different types of rooms. Good size pool area. Walking distance to restaurants and funky/trendy shops. If your looking for something different and not a "chain" hotel, this would be it.
