Owner description: Over the years, people have come to this 1,000 foot long natural limestone pool, fed by several underground springs, for everything from fishing and swimming to baptisms and beauty pageants.

Pool area had a large crowd on a hot day. Nice walking trail down the stream. Lots of people renting canoes, walking, biking, etc. Great park, especially for being so close to downtown.

We had a great time! Get there early! Water is super chilly but it's just a really neat place to be.

Admission is cheap and pets are welcome in certain areas. The water stays icy cold no matter how high the temps. Lifeguards are on duty as well. The pool has a natural bottom so it's covered in slippery algae--water shoes wouldn't be a bad idea. There's also a spot with a diving board too, but if you're going to visit please be respectful of the area and don't trash it. When our family was there we were in the water for 15 minutes and saw a used feminine hygiene product floating in the water. Needless to say we left earlier than anticipated.

We cooled off quickly at Barton Springs after biking around Austin. The place is well set up for changing and swimming. The entrance fee is low. Shaded seating space was limited to a patch of steep hillside when we went, but there are plenty of other shaded areas in the nearby parks for before or after a dip in the springs.

Texas is hot. Barton Springs is cool, literally and figuratively. Austin folks love this place, visitors are welcome, but please be respectful, and, well, cool. Check out the nearby hiking trails on a cooler day.
