“Fun exhibits and beautiful grounds, plus peacocks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2013

For years this museum has had eclectic, fun exhibits, gorgeous grounds with wildflowers and outdoor art along the river, and peacocks roaming the property. It is a relaxing haven in bustling Austin.

“Disappointing Art Venue”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2013

A friend and I recently visited Laguna Gloria, an Italianate stye lakeside estate built in 1916, and donated to the city of Austin to be used as an art museum. The entrance drive to the villa is charming, with many trees and an enticing view of the main building. We entered, paid our $5.00 fee, and were flabbergasted to discover that there were probably no more than 10 pieces of art to view - 2 lithographs and 6 - 8 photographs. The nearby Gatehouse had one room with several paintings, all by one artist. The 2 lithographs were the most interesting, possibly only by comparison. It was so hot that we did not tour the gardens, so I cannot comment on them. If you wanted to visit the site on a cooler day with a box lunch, have a go. Otherwise, it is surprisingly disappointing!

“Great place for weddings and other events”

The outdoor prize of the merger between the Arthouse and the AMOA in 2011. This one of a kind setting overlooking Lake Austin also has great art programs for kids in the summer. A true Austin gem.

“Beautiful Museum on Lake Austin”

This was the original Austin Museum of Fine Arts. Too bad they moved the main site downtown... this is a gorgeous European style home.

“How the Wealthy Once Lived ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

Laguna Gloria is a magnificent Lake Como-inspired mansion built by one of the most dynamic women in Texas history - Clara Driskill of South Texas ranch fame. The home and its site on the Colorado River of Texas are beautiful, but beyond that don't expect much. The art pieces on display in the home are few in number and mostly marginal in quality. Do see the home, though, for what it is and nothing else: a beautiful residence of a powerful woman (and her husband too, lest he be forgotten in her glowing heritage).
