This hidden gem is the most beautiful formation around Travis county. A grotto and pool similar to Hamilton pool across the river/ down the road, but you can't swim here. No one has in 37 years, the guide says. Pristine.

We saw this on an episode of Daytripper and decided to go. It is well worth the effort.
The Preserve is near Dripping Springs, west of Austin, and right next to Hamilton Pool and Reimer's Ranch. The visitors center is near the entrance, and features fossils, a few artifacts, a solar calendar built into the floor.
The highlight is the tour to the cave/grotto. The grotto is stunning. A tour guide walks a small group about a 1/2-mile down to the grotto, with explanations of plants, ecology and geology. Cost is $5/adult, $2/child or $15/family. The trail is unpaved, steep at times, but not difficult. The return back up to the visitor center is at your own pace; the whole tour takes just over an hour. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Access to the grotto is restricted to tours in order to preserve the delicate environment.
The bathroom facilities do not contain plumbing. They are uncomfortable to those unaccustomed to the outdoors.

We were spending the weekend in Austin and visited Westcave Preserve on our way back to SA. It was AMAZING! I love the fact that it's very restricted - only by guided tour. Its gorgous and the tour guide was so passionate about everything. Highly recommend.

A lot work and dedication went in to preserve this place. Very short tour but quite informal.

You would never expect to find this beauty in the Hill Country. Get John Ahrns to be your guide. He knows EVERYTHING about this place.
Excellent learning opportunity for kids and adults. New nature center is awsome. You'll appreciate the coolness in the cave. Wear good hiking shoes for the descent into the grotto. Bring your camera!
