“Neat experience that we can't get at home”
Reviewed 16 October 2011

Arrived in Austin on Saturday afternoon with plans to go to 6th St. with our friends whom we are traveling with (we are in our 50s). Arrived at 6th St around 6pm and had a couple beers and walked the street soon to realize this was not the place for us. Our hotel clerk suggested Congress Ave; Wow, just what we were looking for, great music, great people watching, an awesome evening, and experience we cannot get in our small city. I imagine that we'll go back Sunday afternoon to experience it again...

“Three times the price is a buzz killer”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

Drink a lot of margaritas before you go shopping here to help you handle the sticker shock. Great browsing and very interesting, eclectic shops. Love browsing this area. But the PRICES are outrageous in most shops. American Pickers on Steroids. Holy cow! Really, these prices (e.g. $80 for an 8X10 of the Last Supper you can nab at a yard sale for $1)? Best deals and good values at St. Vincent de Paul, Our Ladies of Charity Thrift Store (on the opposite side of "Madison Avenue" ) and then dining at Magnolia Grill, right down the road, which simply can't be beat.

“Hit up the SoCo trailers”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

Quite a lot of the restaurants and of course the food trailors are dog friendly. I went to probably six in the South Congress, Lamar area near downtown and all except one offered my dog ice water. Try the trailers - all great eateries!

“A Fun Romp”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

One section of South Congress in particular warrants a stop to stroll. There is a collection of shops and food trailers in the 1400 to 1800 block section of South Congress that offers diversions of all sorts. Monkey See, Monkey Do is a fun shop filled with gadgets and dodads. Uncommon Objects is an eclectic "junk" store filled with interesting objects including old hats and vintage board games. It could occupy an afternoon easily. Big Top is a fantastic candy store that features an old fashion soda jerk. They got my attention with the double dipped chocolate covered BACON! It was great! Across the street from these shops is a lot filled with food trucks including the famous "Hey Cupcake" and our favorite "Frigid Frog".

The back in parking is interesting but seems to be safer. We parked in a pay lot behind the food trucks for a mere $5. It was worth it!

“Fun little area”
Reviewed 5 August 2011

This was a fun way to spend part of the afternoon. Probably could have spent more time but got there late on a Sunday afternoon and the stores close at 6pm. Had lunch at Perla's. It was decent....atmosphere was better than the food..I would go back. Really enjoyed shopping at Maya. The salesgirls in there were GREAT! Loved their honesty and laid back approach. Allens Boots is a fun place to go if you're looking for some good 'ol Texan attire. Tons of boots and hats! If you're looking to try some local food there are tons of food trailers where you can grab a bite to eat. Definitely a great place to visit!
