“Perfect slice of Austin”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

A few blocks of walking pretty well encapsulates the Austin "vibe". If you haven't been to Austin before, this is a great sampling of some favorite local activities. Live music at Continental Club, eclectic shopping, and several food choices. And speaking of slices - if you like pizza - Home Slice is definitely worth a stop. Parking is a bit dicey, but once you find a spot - you can walk around and enjoy. When you get tired - walk over to the Hotel San Jose for a cocktail.

Great place to walk and window shop. Lots of Eclectic shops, great food, family friendly.
Day or night are good times to go. View of state Capital. Local events almost every weekend.

“SoCo First Thursday”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

If you're looking for the quintessential Austin experience, go to SoCo (South Congress Ave) on the first Thursday of the month. It's just plain fun! Wear your shorts & flip flops - every thing is very laid back. As you meander up and down Congress, you'll find find great food & even better music. From the famous Continental Club to the garden at Guerros, great music is everywhere. You'll find lots of eclectic shopping, too.

“Go on First Thursday!”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

South Congress is just weird but in a good way. There are a ton of older shops, and a lot of them are eclectic. You have a few thrift stores, a costume shop and a fantastic old candy store. Browsing and shopping there is a ton of fun! And don't forget the food. There are tons of great restaurants on South Congress. Just remember, the busier the streets, the longer the lines.

South Congress is fun, but it is absolutely Austin at its best on the first Thursday of every month. The shops stay open later, and every available space is filled with tents of vendors selling every type of craft you can imagine. There's also a touch of weird with street dancers, car parades, and people offering free hugs. You have to experience it to understand why we want to "Keep Austin Weird."
