“King of the Austin Food Trucks”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2011

In a city of great restaurants, make sure you try and stop by the food trucks on South Congress Avenue for at least one meal. The Mighty Cone and a group of about eight other food trucks are located next to the South Congress Baptist Church about ten minutes south of downtown Austin.

We tried several of the food trucks but the Mighty Cone was the best and the busiest the day we were there. As the name suggests, the Mighty Cone serves all of their food out of a paper cone. The menu is limited but very unique including a chicken cone, an avocado cone, and a shrimp cone. The dishes inside the cones have a kind of spicy and nutty flavor to them since they include chili flakes and almonds in the breading. If you feel like dessert, don't miss the brownie cone, which is a brownie and vanilla ice cream served in a paper cone.

There is seating outside the food trucks on some basic picnic tables. Parking can be a challenge on South Congress Street and not just because there aren't a lot of spaces. People literally back into the spaces on South Congree Street and face out, which is kind of weird. We opted to turn down a side street and were able to find a spot.

“The Greatest Meal on Earth”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2011

If I was on death row and had to pick my last meal on earth, it would be a chick-avo mighty cone with their chili-dusted fries.

Mighty cones are served in a big paper cone (thus the name) similar to the paper cones you use to drink water at a water cooler. They place a tortilla in the paper cone, and then fill it with all kinds of good stuff...spicy, sweet and crunchy breaded mains (chicken, shrimp, avocado or a combo of either meat with avocado), delicious slaw and a double-delicious sauce. Portions are generous, but not so large as to be obnoxious.

The chili-dusted fries are also delicious, and are served with house-made ketchup that includes some peppers to give it a little kick. The milkshakes are decent, and the sliders are supposed to be very good as well (though I've not tried them yet).

The Mighty Cone is a trailer eatery on South Congress in Austin, right in the middle of all the famous South Congress shops and restaurants. While there is not much to say about the decor, there are plentiful picnic benches to dine on, all equipped with "cone holders" for your mighty cones and fries. There are also a number of other trailer park eatery options available in the same area, so you can please everyone in your crowd and still eat together. For those who might sneer at "trailer park" food, I should point out that the Mighty Cone is a variation of a dish served regularly at Hudson's on the Bend, one of the more upscale restaurants in Austin.

I first became aware of the Mighty Cone when they had a food stand at the Austin City Limits music festival (they still do that every year, and they always have the longest lines in the food court), and I was thrilled when they opened the stand-alone outlet on South Congress. Although it isn't real close to my house, I try to eat here once a month.

If you're in Austin and you're looking for a creative, innovative, affordable, fun and delicious meal, you can't go wrong with the Mighty Cone
