“Living on the edge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

A beautifully designed little oasis (with strong doors and high walls) in the thriving East Austin neighborhood. Staff was super nice and after 10 minutes I felt like we knew each other for years. The terrace is a beautiful hangout spot and the rooms beautifully designed.

But most interesting is the location - this really is a "neighborhood in transition"! A local travel guide told me that IN THE PAST, the area was notorious for gun smoke and knife stabbings (the cornershop still has a large selection of scary looking knifes...) but things are changing quickly. Now, you'll find the most coolest bars (Eastern), hippest backyard restaurants (forgot the name) and fantastic edgy cafes (Conete) of Austin here and staff will luckily give you a map. But there are still a lot of the old residents left as well - this area is not gentrified to death yet and you are well advised to keep your common senses with you if walking around at night.

Stayed 2 nights in Room 5 (Queen Bee)

Love, love, loved this place; in spite of an incident on our first night where another guest’s car, parked below the building, was vandalised – we were woken by the assailant honking the horn continuously for literally 10 minutes at around 3am. The police arrived and took care of the situation, which lasted probably an hour overall, but made it hard to get back to sleep afterwards and, to be honest, did make us feel a tad unsafe.

We can laugh about it now though, and should point out that this feeling quickly wore off and at no other time did we feel unsafe in the area. The building itself was secure, with swipe cards required to access the building at all times (except the parking area).

We would have loved to give Heywood Hotel a 5/5, but unfortunately this incident impacted our sleep quality score below, and our overall rating. However, in defence of the owner and staff, we must say they could not have been more apologetic for the incident, given it was completely beyond their control. They assured us nothing like that had happened before and they opened up the mini-bar for the rest of our stay which was a lovely gesture.

The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful and made great recommendations. They even made restaurant recommendations for our next destination (Dallas).

Heywood Hotel is all about the small touches – a handwritten welcome note, black towels for your makeup, quality toiletries (Kevin Murphy shampoo and conditioner), well-priced minibar stocked with local products, dark beach towels to take to Barton Springs, complimentary bikes. It is immediately obvious what you are paying for, and well worth the extra.

Modern, clean and functional rooms and amenities. Breakfast is not available however there is communal tea and coffee making facilities with good quality coffee. We enjoyed breakfast at Cenote Café up the road.

The hotel is in a somewhat central location, about 10-15min walk to downtown, we found it easy to walk and bike most places we wanted to go, and buses and taxis were convenient and cheap.

We would happily stay at Heywood Hotel when next in Austin, and recommend you do the same.

Thanks for staying with us and for all the nice things you said about our property! Our staff works hard to give guests a perfect stay. We're still speechless regarding that incident. NOTHING like that has happened before, or since. I wanted to mention that nothing was taken from the vehicle, and there was no evidence of a break in. So we are really scratching our heads about the back story! We're sorry your sleep was disturbed; if we have the opportunity to host you again, we'll ask the universe to try and keep Austin a little less weird!

Thank you so much for being so understanding, and we're so happy to hear you otherwise had a great stay. Come back and see us!

We flew from San Francisco to meet friends from New York at the Heywood Hotel. Our Austin cabbie was a little confused when we gave him the address - the Heywood is on the east side of Austin in a transitional neighborhood. From the outside, it looks Iike a conservatively renovated row house; but inside it is all creative design and detailed finishing. Kathy, the owner, and her staff provide lovely comforts such as hand-written welcome notes on the bed, fresh baked cookies in the afternoon, tea and fresh coffee (they even French-pressed decaf for me!), and luxurious bath products. The rooms have instant hot taps and the fridges are stocked with small brew beers, and not exorbitantly priced. The neighborhood is fun to amble through with its chic hair salons, art studios and a couple of notable eateries: the breakfast burrito truck whose name I can't remember, Cenote for coffee and brunch, and Weather Up, a not-to-be-missed cocktail bar. My only recommendation to the owners: put some gas heaters on the upstairs deck. This beautiful space is perfect for lounging after hours with friends, but was too cold in February to comfortablly enjoy.

On my first visit to Austin, I found the Heywood via Trip Advisor. The glowing reviews are accurate. It's a small place on the east side of town. It's actually just about a mile to downtown, located in a residential neighborhood.

I stayed upstairs in room 3. The room was a good size and very quiet, not facing the street. Out the front of the room is a nice upper-level courtyard. Photos on their site are accurate.

The modern design of the place gave it a very clean, sleek look and made it clear that it wasn't very old. Bathroom had an open shower (and no tub). Bed and linens were comfortable.

Service was friendly and helpful and arrival and departure were simple. I stayed alone there for three nights and felt very comfortable. If headed back to Austin, I would gladly stay here again!

Room Tip: Room 3 is upstairs, quiet, away from street.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Heywood Hotel. My husband and I were new-comers to Austin and Kathy & her staff had great dinner/bar suggestions for us. We stayed in Room #2, the Queen Deluxe, and it was much bigger than the pictures online suggest. Very comfortable bed, big bathroom, and I loved the instant hot water faucet for tea. We were within walking distance to many good restaurants and bars, but it was still quiet at night and easy to park on-site. We couldn't have had a better experience at the Heywood!

Room Tip: Despite being right off the main lobby, Room #2 was super quiet and very comfortable. There's a...

After a long drive, the Heywood was like Shangri-La. The room was large and comfortable and the details were amazing. The thought and design that went into the entire space is impressive. The location is great and we were able to borrow and ride bikes to the river one evening which was a treat.

Stayed here in September and I think it's the best hotel I've ever stayed at. Not the fanciest, or most luxurious, but a place where they've put so much thought into every detail. It's small (a converted house with a cool modern addition), quiet, and friendly. Decor is modern but comfortable, with a great eye to local art and unique detail. Unbelievably comfortable bed, and great shower and bathroom amenities. They provide an excellent cup of coffee in the morning, which can be enjoyed on the central courtyard patio. The owner and her staff were unfailingly friendly, but low key and unobtrusive. I especially loved the neighbourhood, how it's holding on to a mix of cultures, and hasn't been totally gentrified. Excellent bars and restaurants to be found a few blocks away on East Sixth, and we were totally comfortable walking to downtown (a bit of a hike but not unreasonable), to the Rainey Street area, lake trails, and Congress Ave. Bridge.
