“An Austin Institution”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Great piece of Austin music history. Janis Joplin performed here early in her career. You can read about her & others who performed here in displays by the entrance. Funky Austin diner décor. Excellent, friendly service.
There is a live-music Bluegrass Brunch on Sundays which is great fun. Try to make a reservation, though, as it is always popular.
Most people come here for the chicken fried steak, which is always fantastic. Other dishes to try: Fried catfish, San Antonio squash, Pecan pie.
We held a wedding rehearsal dinner here recently. In-town guests were thrilled because they knew & loved the food. Out-of-town guests were excited to experience a bit of "authentic Austin" and "good home-style cooking." Everything, from the service to the room to the food, went off without a hitch. It was as good as, if not better than, a regular dinner visit.

“INCREDIBLE CHICKEN FRIED STEAK1”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

I had wanted to stop by Georges in Waco and introduce my son to a real Texas Chicken Fried Steak. We were running late and wanted to get into Austin so we passed it by. Upon arriving in Austin, I asked the concierge where we could get good chicken fried steak and he did not even hesitate. He said Threadgills is as good as it gets.

We were not disappointed! From the plate size steak to the incredible gravy and veggies, this is the place to go in Austin for a wonderful meal. I only wish I could get this in Colorado. What an incredible meal, service and atmosphere! Will definitely go back next time in Austin.

“We should have walked out~”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

Three of us went to Threadgill's, just after 1 p. m, Wednesday, July 9. We were politely seated,
had drinks brought, ordered: one Wednesday special, one patty melt, one popcorn shrimp.
Sounds simple. There were only a few customers in our area. We waited almost an hour
for our meal, although waitperson assured us several times that our order was on the way.
By the time our meals arrived, we were irritated, starved, saw others get orders promptly.
Threadgill's was on our "tradition" list for many years. We live out-of-town, and will now
find new traditions. The food was not great, but the price is sure to be on credit card.
Never again.

“Good breakfast”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Enjoyed my breakfast at Threadgill's and especially liked the atmosphere. Lots of Janis Joplin memorabilia / photos etc.

Pretty good choice of food and we were helped along by a live band

Certainbly worth a visit if you are in that part of Austin.

“Not what it used to be.”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Used to be a great place to eat but it has gone downhill big time. Vegetable plates are now poorly prepared as are the daily specials. The place is trying to live on its past reputation. Kenneth Threadgill is turning over in his grave.
