“Why all the hype?”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

Some people call Hyde Park Bar & Grill an Austin institution. It's been here forever, it's in a trendy/yuppie neighborhood close to U.T., and they say their french fries (soaked in buttermilk, battered, then fried) win awards. After visiting last night, I have to say that I am at a loss to figure out why. The place was expensive, loud, and crowded (again -- why, why, why?). The fries served to me certainly should not win any kind of award except one for blandness -- they had no flavor, were mealy, and cold. (There were also some incredibly weird, unidentifiable fibers in them, but that's kinda too icky to talk about.) I ordered a pimento cheese and cucumber sandwich -- a sandwich that should be served cold, but was delivered on a plate made too hot to touch by sitting for god only knows how long under a heat lamp -- long enough to melt any cheese that dared to fall onto it into a greasy puddle. The sandwich, itself, was the best thing served that night -- good cheese mix w/jalapenos and pimento on a tasty hoagie roll (bet the roll was made at the bakery next door rather than in-house). The fried artichokes were OK -- good artichoke, but bland ol' commercial batter that was nothing special, served with a mayo-based dipping sauce that had a thick, discolored skin on top --- ewwww. My partner's mufalatta was deemed "O.K." (but he didn't eat more than 2 bites, so it couldn't have been that appetizing). Service was adequate. We will certainly not be hurrying back here again.....

“Best Fries? Not in my book”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

So the fries are supposed to be AMAZING at this place - I thought they were just ok. I had a chicken sandwich and it was good - nothing special. The pimento cheese sandwich was a big hit with some of the people I went with. I wasn't super impressed with this place.

“Great neighborhood restaurant”
Reviewed 4 March 2012

Very broad menu, lots of great food. But skip the Spinach, not too great. Other than that you can't go wrong.

“Solid food, excellent fries”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

Usual range of american dishes well cooked. Their fries are outstanding, and last time I was there I tried their meatloaf and thought it was excellent as well.

“Good Food, Great Wine List, Great Wait Staff”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

Good place for a simple burger, a salad, o a chicken fried steak. What makes it special is the wait staff -- they always seem willing do what is necessary to make it right. There is a great by-the-glass or by-the-bottle wine list. Batter-dipped french fries and the Wom Kim Peach Pudding are Austin staples
