This is a great historical building that is worth a visit if you are already on Congress Ave. It still hums when the Legislature is in town. You can have a drink, or a even cup of tea to rest up before heading out just to pick up the vibe.

What you must understand about the Driskill is that it was built when travel standards were quite different. By the standards of today, our room was quite tiny, and the bathroom was unremarkable (but clean and well-appointed). The in-room video was fuzzy, but hey, you're not staying at the Driskill to stay in your room, or at least, you shouldn't be. The bed was as good as you'll get anywhere. Some USB and charger plugs on the nightstand would be nice as well.

So, that's all of the negatives - the Driskill is a Romanesque dream, covered stem to stern in dark, cherry paneling and fine granite. I chose the hotel on the reputation of its bar, which did not disappoint - try the Sage Advice, and get a shot of Monkey Shoulder. Ask the bartender his advice - he knows his work.

The Driskill is directly adjacent to Sixth street, and within walking distance of everything in the heart of downtown.

Beautiful place, attentive staff. Interesting and comfortable room. There are cheaper places to stay if you just want to sleep but we thoroughly enjoyed the historic setting and the location is perfect to walk all of downtown. One caveat, the 2nd floor suite was beautiful but could be a little noisy right on sixth, just ask at the desk, they have a variety of rooms.

Stopped into this famous hotel to take some pictures and ended up in the lounge for a drink. They have lots of drink specials and a nice happy hour. A great piano player and nice service.

I don't know why there isn't a separate heading for the bar--there should be. While the quality of both the Driskill Grill and 1886 Bakery has varied over time, the bar is always a rock-solid institution. Happy Hour prices are quite reasonable, and there is live music every night. No one has a bad time here.
