The lunch buffet was perfect for a small group of 4 for a business lunch. It was a great introduction into the countries cuisine. The service was friendly. Will try dinner soon.

If you think you have a liking for Ethiopian cuisines you need to visit. No, it won't be for the surroundings or anything shmancy. It will be for simplicity, good spicy food, grab a plate and go, and the owner wait staff are the sweetest, nicest folks. They alone are worth the visit. Try it...you'll love it!

Went to buffet lunch at about 1:15...towards the end of the service. I am not sure if this had any effect of food quality.

Stayed vegetarian for this trip. What hit me at first was that all the food was a type of "stew." Food that would keep in chafing dishes. There were very few textures.

The eggplant was very good. The potato dishes were good. The spicy lentils were spicy with heat. It was a pretty good heat, not a blistering one.

The bread's appearance is a bit off putting. It tastes fine, but if you never had it before, it looks strange.

I will likely go back and order something off the menu as some of the flavors were very goos and it would be nice to see how a fresh-made dish tastes.

The restaurant is dive-like. That's not saying it is bad, but is isn't sparking tiles and gleaming stainless steel counters.

I LOVE the food here ... Consistently good and if you are a vegetarian, then you have a wide array of choices. For me, atmosphere isn't everything but others may be intimidated by the appearance of the restaurant ( which is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars). The service and staff are great and I am so happy we have this as an option in Austin.

Since moving away from Austin, which is home of Aster's Ethiopian Restaurant, I have tried to locate an Ethiopian restaurant that is even in the same galaxy flavor-wise as Aster's and have failed miserably -- much so that I will frequent Aster's two days in a row when I find myself back in Austin. Aster's is a funky little dive off I-35 near the exit for UT Law School; but, don't let appearances fool you: the food is exceptionally good. What is incredible is that there are dishes for vegans and meat-eaters that are equally delicious. To narrow down your signature dishes, you may want to go there during lunchtime when they serve a buffet (except on Monday when they are closed). The owners are delightful and friendly, and the waitstaff is knowledgeable and fast. The food there is some of the best I have had in my life. If you love Ethiopian, Aster's is second to none. If you have never had Ethiopian food before, why not start with the best? Don't fear the injera bread -- an odd, flat, sourdoughy bread used to scoop up the food (though I use a fork as well). Even if injera isn't your thing, the dishes need no accompaniment and will send your tastebuds into space. The flavors at Aster's are so rich and layered and beyond delicious. You, too, will become an Aster's groupie and dream of the cabbage and lentils (or whatever strikes your fancy).
