“Skiing Made Easy”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

Skiing is not an inexpensive sport unless you are lucky enough to live below Little Cottonwood Canyon. For those that fly to ski areas there are a host of expenses and gratuitous hands extended for your cash dollars. The Alta Lodge is by no means bargain basement but falls into a category of warmth, comfort, and value. Its' close location to Salt lake and the American plan means that there is no need for a rental car simply take the shuttle from the airport. There is no direct tipping at the Lodge though you will pay at checkout, Meals are scheduled and menus posted as breakfast and dinner are included in the daily rate. That means that my pet peeve of the restaurant industry, waiting an hour "in the bar" for your reserved seats can be a long lost memory. You know, your 7 o'clock reservation gets you seated at 8:15 and you finally get served at 9, and you get home at 11. Try that with kids . Not gonna happen here!! Sam the Cooking Man is in charge of the kitchen and that means no worries about being a captive diner.
To the contrary, it will be your pleasure. He has brought a sophisticated touch that respects
the meats and vegetables that his kitchen team puts forth. Impressive, and with your choice of three entrees every night , one of which is vegetarian. I am a meat lover and shared with Sam
a couple recipes for brining last winter. I now realize that was like sharing roller skates with an Olympic class skater. Yes, I have stayed at the Lodge before, every year but one since 1979.
To be candid, prior to Sam's arrival as Chef, the menu was getting pretty old, as it hardly changed. Well it has certainly changed of late and for the better. If you cannot stay at the Lodge, sometimes they allow outside guests in, depending upon occupancy levels. It is worth the effort..............all 59 steps!!

Alta is not for everyone, and neither is the Alta Lodge! If you want to travell with only one suit case, your ski gear, and are not preoccupied with the apres ski attire and show off then this peace of heaven on earth might just appeal to you. Friendly and engaging staff catter to your every need in the most relaxed but attentive and effective manner. Went we three kids ages 5 to 10 and the kids club shuttle service to and from the lodge to the ski school was like a privatte chauffer. The club staff was always glad to catter to our kids plans like sledding and arts and crafts. The food is superb, so much so that our kids ate with us most of the time. The wine list was super accesible. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Ski locker Ski in Ski out is super practical. ski shop next to lodge would adjust my demo skis on a daily basis! At the time of my stay the lodge was full of unpretentious guest who shared the love to ski and the knowledge that sometimes less is better. Local hard core skiers will share their wealth of the mountain with anyone who is engaging at the super cool Sitzmark Bar. Yoga classes early morning before breakfast was an awesome plus to strech the muscles and get ready to rip the mountain on a daily basis. Ski School quality of staff and program I think is unparallel. My kids wanted to move to Alta!

I am a regular at Alta Lodge and a season pass holder at Alta; I would stay nowhere else. Nor would any of the other many, many repeat customers to the Lodge. The lodge is one of the few that fosters a convivial lodge atmosphere -- encouraging guests to join others at breakfast and dinner. And what a range of pleasant folk there are there!! The food has notably improved with the new chef, and the deserts are truly fantastic. Breakfasts are bountiful with a full range of cereals (including homemade granola), eggs, pancakes, juices, etc. The Sitzmark Pub upstairs in the Lodge is the place to be after skiing, with a broad view over the slopes and down Little Cottonwood Canyon. Of course, there is also afternoon tea to savor when in from the slopes. Staff are super friendly and ready to help at all times,.

We stayed in two interconnected rooms as we travelled with 3 children (6, 6 and 8 yrs old). Given the high price tag we paid for every day we were quite disappointed by the size and quality of the rooms. Very basic and dated.

The highlight of the stay was the restaurant; breakfast was great and the daily dinner menu was truly excellent.

We selected the lodge because we wanted to experience a ski in / ski out holiday. Unfortunately you need to take a transfer tow (a long long moving rope) to the ski school. An awful experience with three young kids (lots of tears).

Kids club is included in price. Kids can eat separately with their kids club friends, which is a great service. However, kids club is managed only so so. Lots of movies and not so much other interesting things (games, drawing etc).

Ski school in Alta (Alf Engen) was one of the best we have experienced (Europe, Australia).

I've been coming to Alta with my family for about 10 years now. Every year, the food is consistently delicious and the staff are friendly. There's nothing better than coming in after a long day of skiing to read by the fire in the cozy living room, drink tea and eat the complimentary scones while reading the Lodge copy of the New York Times. It's a little slice of mountain heaven and we love coming back year after year.

Alta is the type of lodge you would expect to find in Ireland. The staff is fantastic and very friendly and accommodating. The owners are friendly and very accessible. Your fellow vacationers are also extremely friendly and often influential. The Lodge itself is perfectly situated with incredible views of Alta and the Wasatch Range. Absolutely Love Alta Lodge! I think this is a great value for the money. You get breakfast and dinner with your rate and the food is quite good...

Comfortable rooms but not fancy. Excellent food!!!! real croissants for example. Staff are cheerful, knowledgeable and helpful. Personally, I liked the rooms. Not a Hilton Resort, much nicer than that.
