“Nice house, nicer people”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

We met friends to spend the weekend in the Bennington/Manchester area, and we stayed here. Michael and Kevin were wonderful. The homemade cookies were a huge hit with the men in our group (I'm allergic to nuts and the other woman is gluten intolerant-so we had to pass on the cookies). But breakfasts were amazing. It's not easy cooking for someone with food allergies and someone who's gluten intolerant while making several meals for all the other guests; their efforts were greatly appreciated (blueberry pancakes turned into blueberry-free pancakes for me, gluten-free pancakes for my friend, and blueberry for the guys--and that was just for the four of us).

I loved the house with the sloopy floors and hand-hewn ceiling beams. But we had a room in the front of the house and, yes, there is traffic. I had some foam earplugs that helped greatly, but if you're sensitive to outside noise you may want a room in the back of the house.

The other guests were friendly and clearly enjoyed themselves. Kevin and Michael obviously work very hard to provide a comfortable environment for everyone. And we never saw the cats--heard them in the morning running around in the rooms overhead--but no sightings. We'll definitely return.

My husband and I decided to spend our 11th anniversary up in VT at the Ira Allen House (with our 4 small children in tow). We had the most marvelous weekend and we can't say enough positive things about the owners and their property. We and our children were greeted warmly by Kevin, Michael and Tim and the amenities were perfect for a family. We stayed in the Remember Baker Suite. It couldn't have been any cleaner or more comfortable. The children had their own attached room and our room had its own private entrance in through the back of the house. They are very accommodating to families traveling with kids and had the necessary high chairs, pack -n-plays, puzzles, swings and other fun games out on the lawn in order to entertain the brood. My children and husband even went tubing down the Battenkill (using the Inn's tubes) and we all tried our hand at the canoe. The grassy area across the street is perfect for a picnic, relaxing, fishing, swinging or playing a game of bocce on the new court. We ate dinner at the inn on Saturday night and the food was AMAZING! The homemade macaroni and cheese was the best I've ever eaten in my life and the fresh gazpacho, ribs and blueberry pie were also divine. Most of the dinner ingredients were obtained locally or right from the owner's garden. Our breakfast the next morning was also incredible and the kids enjoyed the special filled pancakes and animal trinkets on their glasses that were made just for them.
These owners really know what hospitality is all about. We can't wait to return!

I stayed at the Ira Allen House Bed and Breakfast for three nights mainly because it is across the road from Battenkill Canoe where I took some private lessons (very successfully).

To my great delight the library had fascinating information on the original owner who played a decisive role in the American Revolution. In addition, this is a farm to table place with outstanding food. The decor was beautifully done. The three refined gentlemen who manage the place customized my stay and were very friendly but not intrusive. They even packed me a lunch to take to the canoe. Since I am a Manhattanite without a car (and didn't want to rent one that time) this was a huge comfort. An unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: I had a view of the River from my room. You might ask for that.

Green Features: They have put in a special "furnace" that uses recycled wood chips.

We just returned from a wonderful three day weekend exploring Southern VT. We could not have been more delighted with the Ira Allen House! The owners (Michael and Kevin) were wonderful. Extremely welcoming and helpful without being intrusive, and the breakfasts were delicious! Plus, Kevin makes homemade cookies for guests everyday! We stayed in the Abigail Suite, which was ideal for us, as we had our 9 year old daughter with us. The shared bathroom with adjacent, connected rooms was perfect.

The B&B's location is terrific, directly across from the Battenkill River (we borrowed their canoe) and near lots of great sites in Arlington, Manchester, Dorset and Bennington. We explored the area and saw all 5 of the surviving covered bridges in the county, which was surprisingly fun to suss out. The highlight of the weekend for us was a great afternoon at the Quarry in Dorset, where families with kids (older kids, probably ages 8+) can pack a picnic and swim in a truly unique setting in an old granite quarry. Lots of families and teenagers there, some doing daring jumps off the quarry's high ledges. Very fun, but definitely not for everyone due to Inherent danger of the quarry setting. We also enjoyed a beautiful 2 hour hike at Lye Brook Falls, which leads to a pretty waterfall, making the effort it takes to go up all worthwhile. Lots of varied food choices in surrounding towns. Try Lil Britain (authentic English Fish and Chips) and visit the Dorset Farmer's Market on your way out on Sunday for VT Cheddar cheese and Maple Syrup.

Room Tip: Kevin can help you pick based on your needs. That they welcome children under 12 and have adjoining...

This was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast and it was an amazing experience. My boyfriend had booked the stay for us as a gift for me and I did not know what to expect. We stayed for two nights and the first night we got in a little later after traveling for 2 hours (8pm) and the inn keepers were welcoming and friendly. They showed us around the inn and even showed us other rooms that had not been occupied yet. The inn is absolutely beautiful and very historic. The grounds are awesome because they own the land across the street which has the Batten Kill River running through it. They have chairs, a swing, hammock, fire pit, and a screened in gazebo set up by the river which was all open to guests. There is a living room open to all guests with board games, homemade snacks such as cookies and popcorn, and a little bar in there with reasonable priced beer and wine options. Also downstairs is where they have the dining room set up for breakfasts and dinner if you request it. Upstairs had the bed rooms and a little area set up with snacks, a mini fridge with soda and water, and a coffee station. We stayed in the Ethan room and it was perfect for a couple with a queen bed, extra room with twin bed, and our own bathroom. The inn keepers were great for recommending good restaurants, activities and history on the area. The first night we were there they recommended a great place for dinner which was not far away and we had a fabulous dinner. The next day they recommended a place for us to hike nearby with waterfalls. Then the next night we actually had dinner at the inn, where the innkeepers cooked us an incredible dinner for a very good price. The innkeepers seemed really involved in the business and work really hard, which can be seen in the extras and services at the inn. The food at the inn was probably my favorite part. Breakfasts were to die for! They use as much local food as possible and each morning we had a nice hardy breakfast with impeccable service. The breakfast the first morning was local yogurt, fruit, homemade bread, ricotta pancakes and sausages. The second day was yogurt, fruit, homemade scones, and an egg bake. Both were amazing and the innkeepers are really good cooks! My boyfriend and I felt like we were part of their family by the end and we already are making plans to go back. It was a very relaxing weekend and I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants more than just a bed and breakfast.

Well, almost.... We have only stayed at one bed and breakfast before so we don't have much to compare it to but...... I booked a suite for a co-worker and I for a conference at Burr and Burton and at the last minute my husband was able to come too. The home is the actual home that the Ethan and Ira Allen lived in. Kevin, Tracy, Mike, and Tim are the owners who take pride in their home and welcome you every morning and evening with a smile on their faces. Since we don't have much to compare it to I will say if you are looking for a relaxing base for business or pleasure in the Manchester area with personable touches in the rooms, delicious food, and friendly guest service you can't ask for a better place. The details, from the home made yogurt, the fresh local food, the high quality linen, and the home made cookies that await you after a long day out, all tie together an experience that will be hard to forget. The recommendations for fishing for my husband and day trips that he enjoyed while we were working were also very helpful. The area is rich with history and these guys were able to head him in the right direction for exploring the community. Thanks for the fresh bacon, the home made blueberry coffee cake, the chocolate cookies with cherries, the apricot thumb print cookies, and the granola on the yogurt. Top class place!

if you are looking to stay at a historic, comfortable, well serviced b&b, ira allen is it. it is nestled between Arlington and Manchester, Vermont across the street from the Battenkill. lovely facilities. great set up for families with kids. we did a family reunion there and the owners were wonderful hosts. They did everything to make our stay a memorable one. They found a good balance between being there and not being over bearing. The breakfasts were incredible each day. Kevin worked to have each day a different but memorable breakfast. Lots of great coffee. They have a wine and beer license. You can drink in the "tavern" (sitting room) or take it out in the front porch. While the facilities are historic (which means old) they are well kept and have most of the amenities you would want from a good hotel. We also requested dinner at the Inn one night and it was a gastronomic event. Kevin planned the dinner with all local products (we had chicken, salad an incredible cold cucumber soup) and Tim created a "piece de resistance" dessert that was to die for. the mantra about the dessert (again made with locally grown berries) was that it was even healthy!
The hosts did everything to assure that our stay was comfortable and fun. I would highly recommend this Inn.
If there was any negative, it was the weather (over which our hosts had no control). we couldn't enjoy the out of doors as we would have liked due to the incredible heat and humidity and high water level of the Battenkill. Next year, we hope mother nature cooperates, but even if she does not, we know we will have a great experience.

Room Tip: ask innkeeper kevin for a recommendation based upon the size of your party.
