“We already want to go back”
Reviewed 10 July 2014 via mobile

My husband and I drive thirteen hours from our house to Baltimore every summer to visit friends and family. A colleague spoke so highly of this place that my husband, an avid "drive straight through" kind of guy actually suggested we split the drive between two days and stay here overnight. This place is comfortable, quiet, and the staff was friendly. Most staff members that we encountered were very new but very helpful. We arrived very late at night and were able to enjoy a nice port wine in the lobby.

We were so impressed with the accommodations, and with what little we saw of the town the next day that we are already planning on bringing some friends for a weekend getaway.

Martha Washington is a very comfortable historic inn within walking distance of good restaurants, an excellent theater (the hotel will make your reservations) and a fabulous hiking/biking trail (within walking distance behind the hotel). The Inn also has a very nice spa (great pedicure), large indoor pool and outdoor hot tub with plenty of spots to sit (including a large front porch) to read or picnic. A farmers' market is open on Saturdays and is well worth a visit. We bought lunch at the market and brought it back to eat in the shade of the Inn near the outdoor water features on the grounds. The Inn's staff is fabulous. I echo the sentiments of others about the continental breakfast-it is minimal, but the coffee and tea are excellent. A little toast, jelly and butter would be a nice, easy addition.

We stayed here two summers in a row. The room was comfortable and very clean. Unlike a B&B they do not restock the water bottles and snack items. We were told we would be able to get more water if we asked.
The pool, tennis courts, and hot tub were awesome. The hot tub did have leaves in it, but it is outside under several trees. That did not bother us at all. Staff was very friendly for our stay. Centrally located within walking distance to all of Abington. The breakfast was free and delicious.
We will visit again, but it is very expensive, so it might be a while.
Only negative was the air conditioner in the room 316. It was too cold to leave on all the time. On auto it was too loud so it woke us when it came on. This prevented us from sleeping well.

My husband and I came here to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. At first I was kinda stunned at the $500 a night package that included dinner and 2 tickets to the Barter theatre. On arrival we were studded at the grounds. The fountains, small ponds with water falls, hot tub and pools were great and not crowded. We had dinner at the sister restaurant that is location inside the hotel and it was amazing!!! We got 3 courses each and could pick anything!!! Dessert was the best we have ever had. The Barter was a great experience. The pool and hot tub are open 24 hrs and at night we had them all to ourselves. The Martha Washington is a very beautiful and magical place that was well worth the money.

Spent the weekend in a 2bedroom suite. Snacks and water provided. Room clean and comfy. Had a minor maintenance issue which was immediately addressed. Biked the Creeper, had a fabulous dinner at Rain, and saw a play. The pool and hot tub were fabulous, not crowded, wonderful temperatures, and clean. Towels were difficult to locate, but it was a busy weekend. "Sisters" provided comp breakfast which was pretty sparse (fruit, cereal, scones). Hotel staff accommodating and kind, as always. This is one of my favorite weekend get-aways.

Just stayed one night. Staff was perfect. Rooms normal. Price would have been just fine had we taken advantage of their pool and other amenities. Unless I;m staying for several days I'll probably go to the Hampton Inn and save a hundred bucks. Again, nothing bad. Just not worth the difference in price for a night or two.

Room Tip: We didn't use the spa but I've traveled enough to be able to tell that it was most likely a...

The Martha Washington sits on a charming knoll in Abingdon's historic district across the street from the nationally renowned Barter Theater (also the State Theater of Virginia). It's steeped in history and the building has served many uses over its history.

Like most Grand Old Southern Hotels, the Martha Washington is impeccably maintained, the service is world class, the rooms are graciously decorated with period furnishings, and they are clean and spacious. If you want to be pampered, the pool and spa will do just that.

The hotel restaurant, Sisters at the Martha, has just been remodeled. It is elegant but comfortable ...meaning wear what you want. The menu is creative American with an aficionado's wine list.

While in Abingdon, a Barter Theater performance is a must. The hotel can arrange tickets for you. The Virginia Creeper Trail, an old railroad bed, now a bicyclers paradise is close by. Take the 20 mile bike trail from Whitetop Mountain to nearby Damascus. It's a beautiful, all downhill, ride through the Virginia wilderness ...very easy with the possible exception of a sore rear end! The Hotel can also arrange this for you.

It's hard to imagine a resort like the Martha Washing in remote, beautiful extreme southwest Virginia.

If you don't enjoy yourself in Abingdon, ...well you're just board with life.

Room Tip: Check out the al fresco dining
