“Rednecks welcome”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

We arrived at Wednesday night and were accused by the foul odor of a redneck's cigar, which he was proudly smoking on the veranda, just feet from the entrance. When I suggested he indulge in his habit elsewhere his response was something I will not repeat, but he and his equally low rent companions were apparently comfortable spewing two kinds of filth in front of my 6 year old. If the state of Virginia is not enlightened enough to prohibit smoking within 25 feet of the entrances to places of public accommodation (like the entire West Coast) the owners would do well to consider the comfort of ALL their guests and prohibit it. Naturally there was no one at the front desk to speak with about this.
Our room was cramped and overstuffed. The two beds were advertised as "doubles" but were no larger than a full. There were four lamps in the room, one of which did not work and all of which had bulbs so dim that I required my iPhone flashlight to read by. We needed to unplug them all anyway to plug in our phones as there were not enough outlets to accommodate modern travelers. The bathroom lacked a tub and was small and poorly lit. There is NO counter space in the bathroom and very little space in the bedroom to unpack. The property and interior of the Inn are lovely and well maintained, but for the price, modern conveniences, space to unpack and the absence of smoking should be a given.

Had heard so many nice thing about the Martha Washington Hotel and Spa that we treated ourselves before heading to volunteer at the RAM project in Wise, Virginia. Everything could not have been nicer from the start of staff being incredible with helping make suggestions making the reservation, enjoying the hotel with a very lovely room and decorating throughout, to staff very helpful throughout the stay and a treat of breakfast. The location was perfect to explore Abingdon with its treasures and enjoying Barter Theater right next door as well as the Virginia Creeper close by.

Room Tip: Talk to the staff when making reservations. There is a newly renovated section.

Last weekend was magical for our 8-year old granddaughter, as we renewed a 40-year relationship at “The Martha.” Our ostensible mission was to enjoy the Barter Theatre’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.” But a visit to Abingdon has always been inseparable from the enjoyment of the Southern, more particularly Southwestern Virginia, hospitality and culture of the more than 180-year old Martha Washington Inn. Our granddaughter immediately felt like “Eloise of the Plaza” when she saw the beautifully furnished suite with 12-foot ceilings. The folklore of the “ghosts of The Martha” added to her enchantment. We romped in the indoor glass-enclosed salt water pool and outdoor stone hot tub. The highly professional and personable reservation staff of The Martha obtained great seats for us for two performances at the Barter (4th row center orchestra for the magnificent Wizard of Oz musical), just across the street from the hotel. Parking is complimentary and the car is easily accessible a few steps from the old-fashioned rocking chair-furnished front porch of the hotel (as when I want to retrieve items I forget to bring up). The finishing touch to the charm of the Martha Washington is her people. From the welcoming bellman and valet parker, the warm professionals at the registration counter, wait staff in the restaurant and housekeepers in the rooms, we are always made to feel right at home in a by-gone era of fine innkeeping. This unique destination is always ample reward for our 6-hour drive from our home on Chesapeake Bay, inspired by the beautiful Virginia scenery en route, with a nice lunch along the way.

This was George & Martha Washington's house.....how cool to stay in a place our country's first president lived....it is a little on the pricey side....but....the whole place is very historic, the food is good, and you might even see a ghost if you are lucky!!! Across the street is the wonderful Barter Theater and a great place to see a show.....very cool to stay here.

Abingdon, Virginia, is a nostalgic town situated on the Virgina/Tennessee border. The crown jewel is the Martha Washington Hotel and Spa, and is conveniently located on Main Street. Have a courteous valet park your car, then enter your room, and prepare to be catered and pampered. Each room is different, and there is plenty of space for your belongings. Walk all over the place, then return to the front porch which is covered with comfortable wicker chairs, and be content to people watch. At night, they offer you port, then off you go to the 24 hour spa! You will be reluctant to check out, so make reservations for at least two nights!

Room Tip: When you make your reservation, ask the helpful staff for their recommendation for a room!

Wonderful stay! The Martha Washington is like stepping back in time with modern amenities! If you appreciate history you will love the Martha Washington. If you are seeking a quiet place to get away, this is perfect. The hot tub is beautiful, nestled under a canopy of trees, surrounded by ivy and flowers. Relaxing on the huge front porch with a glass of wine was the perfect way to spend the evening. The resturant in the hotel, The Sisters, has great food if you do not want to leave the hotel. However, there are also very nice choices within a short walk. Do not miss a play at the Barter Theater directly across the street. While the inn is good for an overnight stay, we stayed two nights and were glad for the extra time. The longer we stayed the more we discovered. Stop by the visitor's center on the way into town. The ladies there are wonderfully helpful!

Room Tip: We liked the king bed, our room was in the very back of the Hotel and you can hear trains from time...
