Owner description: Discover Alexandria’s five-star hotel of the 18th century! Gadsby’s Tavern Museum consists of the c. 1785 tavern and the 1792 City Tavern and Hotel. The buildings were constructed by John Wise, but made famous by John Gadsby. Mr. Gadsby’s establishment was the center of political, business, and social life in Alexandria and hosted the likes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Today the Museum offers tours, programs and special events.

“History and very good food”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

This interesting restaurant is actually an original tavern from 1770. It was a favorite of George Washington and Patrick Henry and Washington celebrated many birthdays here. It's very authentic and even has a small museum adjoining the tavern. But I bet Washington and his crowd did not feast on food and wine as good as we had. The wine selection, although small, is very good. And the food was also very good. I had roast beef; she had the jumbo crab cakes. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant. You can find better food in Old Town Alexandria, but it won't have the history to go with it

“Old Feeling”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

You walk into a setting reminesent of the early 1900's. The waiters and waitresses are all dressed in old time clothing and the setting looks like it would back then. I didn't get to try the food but the drinks were good and not bad priced

Nice place for a late lunch. Atmosphere is old time and the staff is nice. Don't miss the tour of the upstairs rooms.

The volunteer guide was good both at talking about the history of the place and relating interesting tales.
