but the inside could make "mama" weep. Via Veneto is an old (emphasis on old) Italian restaurant where the owners still are in the kitchen most nights. As a result it's some of the best Italian food around. Unfortunately the inside is also old and in need of a yet-to-be done major facelift. Not sure it wlll ever happen but if it does and the food quality remains it will be Alexandria's best! Not said lightly. Sadly the shopping center where it is located chose to eliminate outdoor seating this summer. So to truly enjoy the best Italian food in town - order and pick up

It's usually over crowded because the tables are jammed so close together that the waitresses can't squeeze by. It's very loud, often hot and the service is mediocre because they're understaffed. Lately the the food has been inconsistent - especially when the cook puts her own spin on classic Italian sauces. In the last couple of years this old favorite has gone downhill due to a lack of competition, little attention being paid to the dining room, and an unwillingness to spend some money to keep the place looking fresh. But now that River Bend Bistro is open just around the corner, the owner/sisters and general manager had better get their stuff together. Call Robert Irvine for a restaurant rescue because we need a good go-to Italian neighborhood joint in Mt Vernon and Via Veneto is no longer it !

i moved down the street about 6 months ago and came to eat here with my father/mother in law.

The server brought our drinks to the table with his hands holding the top portion of the glasses.
The table cloths had holes in them and some were patched up with cloth squares.
There is a exit sign on top of a door (door is blocked by a table) in the dining room that is hollow. The entire bottom portion of the sign is filled with dead flies. There was a small hair in my sausage sandwich. My aforementioned sandwich was one store bought sausage link split down the middle between bread slices.

The interior decor is dated and depressing.

If you love Italian food and you haven't been here, you are missing out. I love their Tortellini a La Crema, Sole, fettuccine Alfredo and Veal Scallopine. For appetizer, I love their Fried Zuchini. Run by two Italian sisters from La Marche region. Their wine list is rather small but very reasonably priced. For me lunch is the best time as the price is very reasonable. There is plenty of parking and perhaps on the way back from George Washington's Mt. Vernon, this will be an ideal place to stop by. It's in a small shopping center on Fort Hunt Road.

We stumbled onto this restaurant that's in a strip mall one night. It's now our "go to" with friends, family and out of town guests. We have never been disappointed in the service or food. Specials can include rabbit, quail, and fresh fish. The White Lasagna special is a must order as are any of the fish specials--their salmon with lemon cream sauce is superb. We rarely order off the menu because they always get us with a special or two but the children love the Pasta Lenzie. They will take reservations and can get quite busy on the weekends--especially Friday night pizza take out orders.
