Old Town Alexandria can be a fun place to meet friends for a meal, visit during festivals, or shop antiques (pricey) stores. As a local though, it can be a difficult place to park on the street, so look for the parking garages. Stay away in the rain because it floods easily, which explains sand bags if you see them. You will be doing a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes. Besides the water front area, there are many great restaurants within a few miles on the other side of town. The main road in and out leads to George Washington Parkway and either way offers many attractions, although a very busy bike path follows along the same trail so if you are looking for solitude don't look here.
