If you love US History and colonial history, you'll love King St. Free shuttle service takes you to the water where you can catch a ferry to DC. Great little restaurants and shops along the way.

Alexandria has the advantage of being charming in an 18th Century way, while being close to 21st century DC. It provides a break from some of the chaos of DC touristing. High points are Gadsby's Tavern (where George Washington had an inaugural ball), the Carlyle house (HQ for the British Army in 1755) the torpedo factory, now an art center with an archeology institute on the top floor, and several vintage houses on Captain's row and Gentry row. Parking can be challenging but nothing compared to DC and the town is easily walkable. Stop at the Ramsey house visitor's center first. Ft Ward is an amazing connection to the Civil War past. Excellent restaurants.

Gorgeous historical town with cute shops and marina. Even the modern venues are set in historical buildings ie. Starbusk, Chipotle.

Old Town has many small boutiques and it is nice to go shop with friends. If you tired from shopping, there is few good restaurants that you can choose for lunch or dinner.
