A small comfortable restaurant with good service and fine food in which one can talk, relax, and enjoy the dining experience. The night we were there my wife and I ordered a salad of portobello mushroom, argula and parmesan cheese to split. We were delighted when it was delivered already divided for us. The mussels and clams on linguine with white clam juice sauce can be highly recommended. I enjoyed the seared tuna on tomato sauce, artichoke and roasted potato but believe it could have been better had it been fixed with fresh cherry tomatoes rather than the sauce which overpowered the taste of the tuna and artichokes.

We've been vacationing in Alexandria, and decided to try this place based on trip advisor reviews. Glad we did.
I usually start out by commenting on the meal, but instead I'd like to start with the service. In a word it was super. Extremely prompt & attentive throughout without feeling like the wait staff was hovering over you.
Our meals were also excellent. We both had a yellow tomato, goat cheese & arugula salad which was very simple but tasted great. The basalmic dressing was subtle; not overdone or overpowering. A perfect start.
For the main course my wife had the grilled Atlantic salmon over mashed potatoes with red wine sauce. While they serve this dish "medium rare" she asked for it to be medium well, and it came perfectly done. I had the osso buco with risotto and italian broccoli. It too was great. For desert we shared a wonderful dark chocolate mousse with raspberries. A nice light finish to a great meal.

The tuna was overcooked (both dishes! ) and it appeared it was in a bad condition (maybe that's why it was overcooked? ).

We end up paying $24 for potatoes with tomato sauce. My kids pasta was OK, but nothing to remember. Servers did not even care to ask how was the food, as they would know the answer.

I just don't understand how come it has such high reviews!

You'll find the menu on their website displays an enticing and eclectic variety of dishes that lean toward Italian but include many others so variety & choice is not an issue. Our waiter was superb, not too intrusive but not negligent and hard-to-find either. His wine recommendation was excellent as well as the main courses. The mushroonm risotto as an appetizer was just right & very appetizing. The entrees were just as well prepared & tasty. All-in-all, this restaurant which has been in business for quite awhile in an area which has frequent new openings & closings, is always reliable & an excellent choice.

We've been going to Geranio for years but have never taken the time to write review. Chef Clayton bought the already successful restaurant back in 1998 and has done nothing but improve it since then. He has a keen ability to keep the menu fresh while still presenting customer favorites. The service is always impeccable and you are always greeting like family. One key to his success is his loyal staff. Some of them have been with him since the beginning. For an upscale, yet comfortable restaurant, this is key.

Geranio has a very fine wine list and wines can be paired to your meal to make it a true dining experience. It's hard to recommend one item over another but Chef Clayton's mussels prepared in an orange zest and wine sauce are something you will never forget. The smoked chicken with homemade fettuccini is a dish you won't want to miss.

There is an upstairs room for larger groups/dinners/receptions as well. If you're looking for a hearty meal with friends or a quiet dinner for two Geranio is the place to go.
