“Interesting lunch choices”
Reviewed 12 November 2013 via mobile

Our waiter, Trevor, was a little off today. Unfortunately, that rubbed off onto our meal. The fried oysters I had for a first course were excellent. The Tilapia sandwich special I had was uninspired. My wife ands all had salads which were also not inspired. The onion rings we had for an appetizer were light and wonderful. There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Old Town that will get my future business instead of Majestic.

“Date night with my wife.”
Reviewed 11 November 2013

Right in the middle of old town Alexandria this was a nice night out. It was my wife's birthday, I made reservations the night before, we were seated without a wait. The staff knew we were coming and took great care in preparing our meal. My wife has food allergies, the chef made sure everything was cooked to perfection. Our meal was fantastic. Coming from California on vacation we don't get a lot of opportunities to visit places like this at home. The night was enchanting and memorable.

“Perfect for Lunch!”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Our fried oysters (local!) were perfect; light batter and not greasy. The corn/lima succotash was "just out of the garden" tasty. The vegan in our group enjoyed his guacamole and also the spinach dish.

While it was "lunch time crowded" the service was good and our waiter attentive. The Majestic is always comfortable and tho predictable, it is not dull. It's a family favorite when we are in town.

“Not Up to Par”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

I have eaten at the The Majestic Cafe a number of times, because I love the idea of it. But the reality falls short. Last Sunday I ate there with a party of five, with reservations, including four "Nana's Sunday Dinner" meals. Wine came promptly. It seemed forever before those who ordered cocktails finally received them. Then it was a full 45 minutes before those Sunday dinners arrived. It was as if we and other diners were not expected to arrive at the dinner hour. Bummer. The food looked great, and the potatoes and gravy were good, but the pork roast was quite overcooked. Too bad it wasn't served to us sooner and less overdone. Then it was forever before our dessert of apple pie - really mediocre, for which I would have apologized to my family, if I had served it at home - finally arrived. Meanwhile, the noise level continued to rise to intolerable levels, which precluded conversation. Never again.

“Comfortable, polished and easy”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

We had dinner this evening - again - at The Majestic and, again, it was a pleasure. Perhaps a measure of its local popularity was that both the bar and dining room were full when we arrived for our 6PM reservation. We were promptly seated and drinks followed with dispatch.

The menu is solid American, not experimental, and includes meatloaf, stuffed prok chop, scallops, rockfish, etc. Wine and beer lists are plentiful and reasonably priced. The dinner began with a starter of guacamole, made at tableside by Simon, who oversees the dining room...his is a well balanced blend of avacado, chilies, onion, cilantro and lime juice that has become a tradition of ours. For the main course, the three of us had rockfish, roast chicken and the stuffed pork chop. Portions are generous, but not daunting. My choice - the stuffed chop - was the best pork chop I have ever eaten...moist, tender and accompanied by a savory sauce and braised brussels sprouts. My wife had perfectly cooked rockfish with sauteed vegetables and fine herbs while our daughter enjoyed the roasted chicken with green beans and potatos. As I said, basic ingredients, but perfectly cooked and imaginatively flavored.

We decided to pass on desserts and ended an enjoyable evening with universal agreement that we should come back...soon.
