Attraction details
Owner description: Two houses on the property: 1. Woodlawn is a house that was built on George Washington's property for his step-granddaughter Nelly and her husband Lawrence. Starting off as 2,000 acre plantation built in 1800, the house went through a number of interesting owners before becoming the first site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. 2. Frank Lloyd Wright is practically a household name these days, but this small Usonian house was a unique design of his. Originally built in 1940 in Falls Church, VA; this house is a true example of preservation-in-action!

“Nice colonial home and Frank Lloyd Wright home”

We particularly enjoyed the Wright house. Touring one of his creations is like stepping into a painting. He planned almost everything you see.

“Quite a contrast”
Reviewed 29 August 2013

This was my first visit to a Frank Lloyd Wright house and I learned quite a bit about him as an architect and what you'd have to put up with if you wanted one of his homes. You can look at photos, but seeing the home in person with a guide is much more meaninful. At Woodlawn I learned more about George & Martha Washington's family. If you've been to Mt Vernon, seeing this house is miss-able but still interesting. Other reviews here give you more detail.

“If you enjoy Frank Lloyd Wright, you must see the Pope Leighey House.”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

We had an amazing tour guide and described not only the house but the philosophy and development of Wrights architectural vision. Our guide was able to explain features specific to this house as well as innovations found in other FLW homes.

“Frank Lloyd Wright House”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

This attraction offers 2 separate houses to view, one Colonial, a former manse of a plantation, which housed relatives of Geo. Washington. This is the lesser of the exhibits. While authentic, the historical value is negligible and property not well restored. The other exhibit, the Pope-Leighey House, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is definitely worth the trip. It was designed by Wright for a mid-level government employee on a tight budget and gives Wright the opportunity to show he can deliver a lot for little compensation. Wonderful example of a structure that’s original and designed to actually be lived in. Both houses have guided tours. Tickets sold separately.

“Present Little Known History”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Most travellers do not know about Martha Custis, Mary Washinton's daughter. This property was given to her. The mansion is lovely - tour complete and not crowded. And there's a hidden bonus if you like architecture - a small but perfect Frank lloyd Wright (father of modern architecture). It's a gem.
