“A little different, but interesting and in a nice setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2012

I've stayed at this place frequently, and, frankly, it's tempting to fill in that one extra circle since I really like it, but I recognize that others will see some deficiencies; hence the four-circle rating. The suites are decent, generally not with the most modern appointments (varying slightly from room to room) but clean and spacious. The setting is slightly out of the way, about a half mile walk south from the Rosslyn station of the Washington, DC Metrorail (though a scheduled shuttle is available), and if you choose to walk it (or drive there; I always walk) it would pay to have a good map the first time you try it. The setting is residential and quite nice in my opinion. For sight-seeing, it is a short walk (about 300 yards) to the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial, and less than a half mile walk from the hotel into Arlington National Cemetery via a side gate just south of the Iwo Jima Memorial, though it is perhaps another half mile to the Visitor Center. Nearby restaurants are scarce, and I generally end up hiking back to the area around the Rosslyn Metro station for food (or buy groceries and cook - the suites have full kitchens), but there is one interesting bar/crabshack/burger/steak restaurant, the Quarterdeck, hidden down a back street behind the hotel. (And I strongly recommend *not* going to the other nearby restaurant, in the Best Western Iwo Jima visible from the front of the hotel - I have eaten there twice, and regretted it both times.)

My overall recommendation is to try this place and see how it fits with your opinion of what a hotel should be. As I mentioned, I like it a lot, and look for a chance to stay here when I'm in the DC area.

I stayed at the Virginian Suites for one week while visiting Georgetown University. The university booked me into the hotel because they presumed it would be convenient to go to Georgetown. In good weather you can walk to Georgetown in around 30 minutes and the two busses (hotel shuttle and circulator) can take about the same time. It is around 15 minutes walk to Rosslyn metro station or one can take the shuttle bus. If one has business to do in the area, it is probably fine, but I found the hotel to be remote and it took a long time to get anywhere without a car. The area is not the nicest but seems safe.

The reception personell was not very friendly but okay and I was surprised that there was no one to offer help with the suitcases. The room is spacious but some of the furniture is old and it is not impeccably clean. The bonus is having a kitchen for preparing meals which is convenient. There is also a launderette if one stays for a longer period of time.

When in DC/Georgetown next time, I will ask for a hotel in a more central location but if you have car to get around and want the home comfort, it is probably fine.

I had been in the hotel previously and was happy to see it had changed management becoming one of the Choice Hotels. I was hoping the structure could be made better. Unfortunately there is still a lot to be done regarding renovations. The structure is large and is made up of rooms that all have the use of a kitchen. it helps when you are staying for a long time and do not want to eat out. Sme of the furnitures have been renewed but the suite I was staying in ( I was told it is ine of the best) still had major issues.
Positive:
Space
Kitchen
Flat screen HD tv

negative:
the bathrooms are amazingly small
Cleanliness of room not impeccable
WiFi slow
no ramp for bags
reception is very small and always busy

Main issue: absoutey Overpriced

My wife and I stayed for over 2-months and overall found the hotel to be of good value. The hotel is not the best, but for the price, large sized rooms, great staff and location, we would stay here again. We were looking for a place to call home and Virginian Suites met this well. Yes, there other newer hotels in cooler places of town with more amenities, but we wanted a quiet stay away from the more urban areas. We easily got around via metro, taxi and occasionally renting a car from National.

This is a place where you get what you pay for, which is OK. The queen suite we are staying in is large, has a "dressing room/closet" area directly outside the bathroom and a nice-sized kitchen. The living room is quite large as well. Bed and couch are OK comfortable (pillow a little high). Flat screen TV. Overall, relatively clean.

It is old and it doesn't seem that management has taken the time to keep up the maintenance or maybe just did it at very low cost the first time around. Paint is peeling off of the cabinet in the bathroom; the carpet edge is not lined up along the wall; and there are a few broken tiles that don't seem have much hope of getting replaced. The gas stove in the kitchen in our suite does not work, so I am not sure why there is a kettle. A nice-sized fridge, though.

We chose this place because it is sort of "in the middle" between Tysons Corner and the city. For the location, this is a good spot for the money.

The price for a suite in this hotel is very good. The room was spacious and laid out well. It was very quiet (we were on the top floor) and the bed and couch were very comfortable. They've made good choices with these things.

It is an older hotel, and offers nothing fancy. From the entrance to the elevators guests have to carry suitcases up a flight of 4-5 stairs. This could be for some; I didn't see anyone available to assist. Also, the electronics in the room has some issues. I set the clock alarm, and as a safety measure called the front desk for a wake-up call. I'm so glad I did the latter, because the alarm never went off (I checked the clock and it was set right, volume was up). And the bedroom cable line has been ripped out of the wall, which we discovered when we tried to watch TV. It was fixed the next day, but prevented us from watching that evening.

All in all, it was a pleasant 3-day stay.

Room Tip: The suites appear to not cost much more than regular rooms, and they are very spacious.

I've stayed at the Virginian Suites an average of 4 months per year over the last 6 years. I've seen it change hands twice, and I have to say, while it's always been very homey with a great service and wonderful staff, the most recent remodel has greatly improved the furnishings. The beds are comfortable, the furniture has been upgraded and modernized, etc. I love the fully-equipped kitchens! And the rooms are very spacious, especially for families or for long-term guests. The location is great - far enough away from the city to be nice and quiet, but close enough to get where you want to go quickly. It's not the Ritz, but it is a great place to stay!

Room Tip: All the rooms face quiet streets, but try to get a room away from the elevators, which can be a litt...
