“good place to stay”
Reviewed 10 August 2009

Americana hotel is not a luxury place to stay, if you want some place luxury, it is not a right place. But if you want to feel some place like home, convenient, cozy, and easy-reach, you are there! I like its small but neat room, like enjoying sunshine when I have breakfast in lobby with a cup of coffee and newspaper.

Imagine: The I Love Lucy show.

"If" you place yourself back to yesterday when the I Love Lucy show was in full bloom. Then, what hotels were like back then. There you are "The Americana Hotel"

It is not for everyone but you will not find a cleaner room or friendlier staff. I stayed at the Americana for 17 days (average price for Deluxe King Bedroom was $104 a night) while in the DC area on business at the Pentagon and Crystal City area. It is by far the best value for a nice, clean room but NO extra's.

Compare the prices of the area. Sure you can pay $200 0r $300 a night if that is what you wish to spend your money on but why not spend it seeing the Nations Capital instead?

Safety?? Crossing the streets in the DC area is scary but at the Americana I felt at ease walking all over the area to the Crystal City Mall, Pentagon City Mall or the Pentagon which is less than 1 mile away. The choice is yours.

On advice from a colleague, I chose this motel from some others in the area. Like the colleague, I couldn't live down the fact that I was staying at "that place" while at work in the area. But for all of the laughs, and jokes about whether they charge by the hour, I had a very pleasant stay.

Upsides: Location is pretty good, with a metro stop, Crystal City Shops, and even Pentagon City within walking distance. Rooms clean, beds comfortable, quiet at night even with the highway nearby (probably because the highway is raised, never heard it). Wireless internet for free. Breakfast was always something to look forward to- nothing fancy, but it was free with the room, and offered a chance to relax before heading out for the day.

Downsides: Get ready for the ribbing to come from people who find out you're staying there, looks like it hasn't changed a bit on the outside since the '70's. Rooms not the most modern, even though not bad.

The hotel is on the freeway in an area I felt uncomfortable in. The room was dirty and the hallway smelled. The only positive was they refunded my money when I told them I could not stay there.

I travel a lot to the DC area and have been staying at the very same hotels and needed to brnach out for an inexpesnive 3 night stay. Found the Americana for sub-$100. i know the Crystal City area and figured it would only be bad for 3 days.

Arrived w/ very low expectation and the outside certainly doesn't look like a gem. Looks like a converetd motel to Hotel and the built an off ramp right beside the 2nd and 3rd floors on one of the wings. Frankly, this was the only negative of the stay.

Check in was great, i had a lot of questions for the front desk guy about metro entrences9 1.5 blocks away through the Marriott), places to eat, a couple of things i needed to pick up at Rite aid and he was great. Small elevator brought me to my 4th floor room and it was really clean, large for DC and had a private AC to keep things cool. While it was a bit noisy, the self controllable AC was great as we had a good deaql of Temperature fluctuations and it was really easy to raise and lower the temp. Bathroom while a bit outdated was really clean and for that I am always happy. the hot water got to the shower quickly and it had pressure like the old showers used to have before th big chains regulated the,m. Bed was comfy and the maids were great about the various times i asked them to make up the room.

Wifi did not work up ion my room so i had to go to the lobby which was filled w/ newspapers, water to cool down and lots of nice people all who had a different story why they were visiting DC. Very casual and good conversations. Breakfast (free) wa smostly dunkin Donuts and coffee but reallyy.... what's wrong w/ THAT?

Lots of shuttle service and i saw many people asking foor special favors and the front desk rsponded.. 23rd street which is a street filled w/ resturants was a 10 minute walk and it was easy to access. Waled into the underground mall every day for access to metro and sundries and it was literally a 5 minute walk.

So w/ expectations that were not so high, Americana exceeded them and i achieved my low cost stay and was a happy guy.

If you are looking for a no frills comfortable place to stay than this is it. Nice front desk. Clean rooms, helpful staff. What more could you ask for in DC. If you are going to be site seeing all day long, then this is the place for you.

If you're looking for a great deal on a hotel, look no more! This one is an older hotel, but owned by the same family since the 60's. The room was spacious enough. The bathroom was cleaned every day! It always smelled so nice! The front desk people were really nice, too! This hotel is very convenient to the Metro. Walk down to 23rd street, and you have your pick of restaurants. Very safe area! My daughter and I had no trouble anywhere. We walked everywhere. We didn't use our car for the whole six days we were there. The parking is free! The continental breakfast is nice, if you like fresh Dunkin doughnuts, cereal, bagels and some fruit with orange juice to drink. It was enough for us. A very good stay!
