“Basic but Very Convenient”
Reviewed 21 June 2012

Based on TripAdvisor reviews (and our budget), we chose to stay at the Highlander Motel for three nights while visiting Washington, DC on vacation this year.

The motel is, as stated by other contributors, basic. We stayed in Room 25, which is adjacent to the lobby facing the main road on the first floor. The room was clean with ample room for our things. The flat-screen TV had lots of cable channels from which to choose and reception was good. The bathroom area was remodeled and was very nice. The sink area was granite and there was a walk-in shower. Internet was free (as was parking!) and reception was very good.

The day of check-in, we arrived about 10:30 a.m., as we had tickets to see a National's game. When I made reservations I was told that parking at the motel would not be a problem at all - even if our room was not ready. Well, not only were we able to park -- but they had a room ready, as well! So we were able to check in and catch the subway to the ballpark right away.

We were about a 10 minute walk to the subway. The area is very nice...not seedy at all.

Each morning there is a small breakfast area from which guests can take breakfast back to their rooms. Remember, this motel was designed BEFORE breakfasts became common for motels. Still, they offer this perk and the choices are very nice. There was fresh fruit, donuts, bagels/cream cheese, and yogurt each morning. Of course, there was coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, as well. We appreciated the quick-start breakfast before leaving for our long days of sight-seeing.

Synopsis:
Price: Excellent
Location: Excellent
Guest Service: Excellent!
Housekeeping: Honest

To explain the honesty of housekeeping: The first day we left housekeeping's tip in an unconventional place (forgot to move it before leaving the room) and when we returned...the money was still there! Our housekeeper must have been unsure whether it was a tip, or money left out that belonged to us - so they did not take it! I took it to the front desk and made sure that the employee received their tip - and let management know how much we appreciated the honesty of their staff.

This is a nice motel that will appeal to those of us who remember when almost all rooms looked like this on vacations of old. Those who are more accustomed to shiny, new accommodations will probably not feel as comfortable at the Highlander.

Room Tip: Rooms in the rear of the complex will probably be quieter and seem more cozy.

I stayed at the Highland Motel for three nights in May and then one night again in June. It served my purpose perfectly as I was in the Washington DC area to deliver my daughter for an internship, and then came back again to pick her up. I wanted clean, convenient to the Metro and DC, and reasonably priced.

The location was just a couple of blocks to the Metro Station and the ride in to DC took maybe 15 minutes or so.The rooms were clean, bed comfortable, and the area was safe with many college students walking.

The breakfast is minimal with doughnuts/muffins and some fruit, but it was fine for us as that was not a huge priority and we ate enough to get us to lunch.

I would definitely stay there again. The only negative could be for someone with small children as both rooms that I stayed in did not have a tub and I'm not sure if any of the rooms do. Other than that it is an excellent place to stay at a great price for DC!!!!

Room Tip: On the back is quieter than on the front. I had no problems with noise and I usually do at most hote...

What a great little motel in the midst of Arlington! It's your basic motel without all the frills, but it is VERY reasonably priced and VERY clean. They have a great continental breakfast with fresh fruits, bagels, donuts, and yogurt. Close to the metro and stores also. We will definitely stay again!

Stayed here for three nights with the family for a short visit to DC. Picked this place based on good tripadvisor reviews, free parking and close to metro. It is a short 2-3 block walk to metro, free parking, good neighborhood. Hotel is very basic old school motor lodge run by a family. Clean rooms of ok size. Very small bathroom. Allowed parking before we checked in so we could visit city. Only real issue is there are some folks who stay here on the weekly rate. One kept camping chairs on the balcony and sat outside and smoked, another kept the door open and was a rather rough looking lady sprawled out on the bed and a guy in a downstairs room kept door opened and every time our teenage daughter went down the steps he was at the door scratching a quite large gut. He apparently said something to her once so she just waited until I went downstairs to go. So yes it is inexpensive, yes it is clean and close to metro and the folks running it are nice but some of the weekly renters make it just ehhhh. If it was just me or my wife no problem, with our two kids I will stay elsewhere next time.

Room Tip: If you stay try and get on the backside away from the busy road

We were looking for 2 nights around Washington as part of a mini tour of the East Coast, and a quick search found most hotels were pretty expensive, even on the Arlington side. But Highlander popped up on tripadvisor with great reviews so we decided to give it a go. Almost half the cost of most other hotels, this is a very basic motel, sort of like those you see in films where they stick witness protection folk. It has clean and comfortable beds, and in a 5-10min walking distance from a metro stop (the metro is simple to use and gets you into main Washington in around 15mins).

The free breakfast is simple (coffee, bagles, donuts) but fine for its purpose, and the area is close to a few cool diners and restaurants. We asked for a room towards the back, as advised by Tripadvisor, and I'd recommend you do the same as the front rooms are straight on a very busy road. From our spot at the back we had limited noise from outside (save some chirpy birds living in the stairwell) although the walls are a little thin between rooms - we heard every word of our neighbour's rather heated phone conversation.

In all, this is great for those on a budget. Don't expect luxury, but do expect somewhere nice enough to stay in an area that isn't too scary.

Room Tip: Ask for room at the back.

Ignore outdoor pics, everything else is more than worth it. Stayed 3 nites. Location was perfect, nice neighborhood, quick off&on freeways, 3 block walk to Metro and access to DC. Room was more than basic..great shower! Marios next door had great subs (overflowing with goodies) AND ice cream. Friendly staff. Price the BEST deal! Would go here again in a second.

Room Tip: only have comfortable doubles..no queen. Front is noisier but rooms/bathrooms newer?

This is a great value for someone wanting to explore DC and surrounding area. The rooms were very clean, as was the property generally. The free breakfast was a pleasant surprise - whole wheat bagel-type toast or pastries and doughnuts plus yoghurt and fresh fruit and OJ. It's $9 for a day pass on the metro so we would ride off in the morning and return late evening, often stopping at Foggy Bottom for dinner on our way back. Overall, highly recommended if your on a budget!
