I've lived in DC for 20 years and I am consistently drawn to stay - for resources like this. It's a 20 mile trail from Arlington to Mount Vernon and hugs the Potomac River. Whether I take a bike or just take in a run or walk - i always look out over the water and count my lucky stars that such a trail exists in my hometown. Whenever I travel I always struggle to find a decently long piece of trail to run on - and then wish "everyone had one of these".

Living in DC, many take these trails for granted. But visitors and residents alike should take advantage and jog/bike the Mt Vernon trail. My favorite stretch begins by Teddy Roosevelt Island and east/south onto the wooden planks, past the Lincoln Memorial (joggers can cross the highway and go across the Arlington Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln memorial and back again) and then onward to the airport. I think it's pretty cool when the planes are landing to the south and come in low over Gravelly Point. There are parking lots along the trail for those who must drive to get to the MV trail. But if you have time, definitely go across the foot bridge to visit T.Roosevelt Island and the TR Memorial. It's at the center of the island and kinda part of the Mt. Vernon trail. No one I talk to (locals included) seem to even know about it.

I love running along the Mount Vernon Trail! It's the best place around for running, biking, sightseeing (the views across the Potomac can't be beat, especially at sunrise!), bird watching, walking, etc. It takes you from Mount Vernon (Washington's estate) all the way up to Georgetown. The Memorial Bridge is on the way, so you can also access DC from behind the Lincoln Memorial. Definitely go for a stroll or a run!

The trail follows the Potomac giving you nice views of the river and the occasional park along the 18 + mile trail (depending where one starts). On a nice day, parts of the trail can be quite busy.Pretty and scenic trail!

This is a bicycle trip from Old town to Mt Vernon. Take a day and enjoy. The trail in spots can be boring especially close to Mt Vernon, but GW home is a must
