“Perfect travelers' hotel”
Reviewed 1 January 2009

I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hotel. My wife and I were traveling and looking for an affordable but nice place to stay--this fit the bill perfectly. The room was HUGE, very clean, very quiet. Very comfy king size bed. Great breakfast with lots of yummy options. Even the coffee was decent (and I'm very much a coffee snob). Didn't use the pool or other amenities, but in short the hotel was really great.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Ashland for four nights when I went to Virginia recently. I really liked the hotel. The room was very nicely decorated, and the walls were thick enough to avoid outside sounds. I was actually near the vending machines and elevators, but neither of them bothered me. The only issue I had with the room was that the showerhead pressure wasn't that great. Not a big problem, but if you wash your hair and have to rinse, it might take a few minutes...

Also, the hotel has a workout room, a whirlpool, and an indoor pool, all of which were nice. The fitness equipment all worked and there was a TV. I didn't really see any other guests using the pools or fitness room, but I made use of it and it was really nice. The staff was also very nice and helpful. I asked for additional conditioner and shampoo and they happily provided, never had any problems with the staff.

The continental breakfast was okay. They had hot items such as pancakes, bacon, sausage, cheese omelets, French toast, etc (not all of this at once, of course, like two things each morning). The breakfast was pretty good, but after eating it two days, I decided I wanted something that wasn't so carb-heavy (the only type of fruit they had was bananas, some more fruit would be nice). They did have 4 types of cereal, several types of juice and milk, and plenty of bagels, muffins, and other simple carbs...

The location was great and Cracker Barrel, Applebees, and McDonalds are within walking distance. It's very close to the interstate and also very close to Ashland. I also liked how the lobby was big and spacious and had decor & pamphlets from Randolph Macon College, it was nice to see that they support their local schools.

I would definitely stay here again, and really the only thing to make my stay better would have been more fruit on the breakfast bar. Other than that it was great though!!

  • Liked — The indoor pool, whirlpool, fitness room... helpful staff.
  • Disliked — No fruit really on the breakfast bar.

We stayed here for two nights with two eight year olds. The hotel was very nice and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. They had sausage and french toast one day, and biscuits and sausage gravy the next. They also had cinammon rolls, cereal, pastries, juice, coffee, ect.
The kids loved the indoor pool. It was about 5 minutes from Kings Dominion. There were lots of places to eat within walking distance. Overall, a very nice stay.

It is generally a good motel all around. Clean, modern. Indoor pool which we did not use. Nice small breakfast selection. A few family restaurants are within walking distance. Front desk staff I encountered were indifferent to my presence and further inquiries.

I had a great time at this hotel. My hubby and I were going to King's Dominion and stayed here for 2 nights. It was very clean, the lobby was nice, it had a computer with Internet to use. The room was very decent, nice and clean and the bedding was very very comfortable, unlike other hotels I stayed at. Breakfast was awesome, there was lots to choose from like warm cinnamon buns and eggs, bacon plus anything else you'd want. The coffee was excellent too! The staff were very friendly and efficient. All in all a great hotel, would recommend it to anyone!

Big room, good size bathroom. Pool was ok, but crowded. Steps leading into pool were very slippery, and I slipped getting in, but did not get hurt. This could have been a problem had I not caught myself on the handrail. Hotel should put some anti-slip strips on these steps and in the hot tub as well. A little noisy, we could here the people upstairs running, jumping, etc. When a toilet would flush, the pipes must run through the wall right next to the head board on our bed. Thankfully we were not awakened in middle of the night by this, but heard it distinctively before 11 PM and as we were getting up in AM.

Rooms were extremely clean. Towels were plush and fresh. Beds were a little too soft to my liking, but still nice. Staff was helpful and had smiles on their faces. Believe it or not the grits tasted good! The morning breakfast consists of frozen items put in the microwave.(Ex. pancakes, cinnamon rolls, eggs, sausage). There is always cold cereal, yogurt, donuts, and juice.

If you go to Kingsdominion, bring a picnic lunch. I paid more for food than the tickets themselves. Parking was $10. A pizza pie cost $26. Lemonde or soda $4. Water $3.50. Ice cream was expensive too and didn't taste good.

Again the hotel was great and I will stop there on my way from Pennsylvania to Myrtle Beach again.
