The hotel's peak season is in the winter time. Lots of ski resorts near by. We were there in late summer and perhaps that could explain why it seemed like half the hotel it could have been. We were traveling with 3 young children. And the place accommodated children with a playroom and a couple arcades which was nice. But as far as large enough elevators or escalators for strollers or large luggage, at times it seemed like they were not thinking about that at construction time. One dinky elevator for one whole wing of the hotel just doesn't cut it. The rooms appear clean, but they are SO smoky, even rooms designated as non-smoking smelled bad. We asked to change rooms but there was no difference. The rooms are nicely sized for our family of 5. We had two twin beds and two futons. The Japanese must enjoy a hard bed, because I've yet to find a soft bed in any hotel in Japan. I didn't sleep well on either bed or futon. So if you're looking for a firm bed, this is your place.
The hotel decor is mixed. The first room we got was more no frills and utilitarian. The second room was very traditional Japanese decor (dark wood, tatami mats and traditional bathroom). I preferred the second room because of it's authenticity to traditional Japanese styling.
We purchased a package deal, and it was well worth it. It included buffet dinner and breakfast. They may not be able to get non-smoking right, but they do get FOOD. Great selection, fresh, and not boring. Traditional Japanese fare and a little international fare too. I'd highly recommend the fresh baked croissants at breakfast!
The scenery around the hotel is fabulous. It was a great escape from the city. The best part was the public baths in the hotel. They have the traditional separate gender baths. But they also have a coed (swimsuit only) section that is part out doors. There is a large dry sauna, and hot tubs out doors. All very well designed and landscaped, and maintained. Very relaxing. I would go back for the food and baths.
