This is a small hotel, on a road parallel to the beach, in a relatively good location. Rooms are small (the overal impression of the hotel is that it is very basic), the -shared- bath is simple yet very nice, as you can often have it to yourself, and the price is reasonnable. The front desk person didn't strike us as particularly welcoming.

My partner and I spent two days in this ryokan, which is approx. 15 mins. away from the tourist destination Kamakura by Enoden (the famous local train). At first I was a little worry that it will be too far from the kamakura city, but indeed the train is frequent, very pleasant to ride on, and runs till late.

Back to the Ryokan - it is right by the train track and I can imagine some of the complains from other travellers could probably be true. fortunely we have a room at the back, facing a small garden. So noise wasn't an issue for us.

the room was generally clean, in very good condition, though with a little bit of smell though. It smells like smoking room, but there was a non-smoking sign right at the front desk....hm.

bathroom and toilets are shared, but they are very clean. There is also an Onsen on L1 where guests can use for free. You can lock the door and have the whole bathroom place for yourself!

Language was an issue with the staff, as expected. however, they were extremely friendly, and made all the attempt to have a conversation with us.

Lastly, many fun places along the same street - there is a great tofu place for soy drinks down the street, the soba restaurant where you can see them make their soba at the storefront window, and a very nicely maintained quiet temple at the end of the road. the water is just one block away. it's lovely.

All in all, i would highly recommend this place. It's quite conveniently located, off the heavily touristy kamakura.

Kakiya ryokan is run by the same owners as Kakiya restaurant across the street which is renowned for its seafood. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were fine but unfortunately the ryokan is not up to the standards of the restaurant. Having booked a Japanese style room with bath via Japanese Guest Houses (JPY 21,000 per room/ night incl. dinner & breakfast) we got an extremely noisy room towards the street which was soaked with the smell of cold tobacco smoke. When we asked for a different room, the staff first seemed to be willing to offer one, but then decided we should switch on the airconditioner as "smell will go away". No need to say that it was useless. We had expected from the photos on the internet that there might be some noise from the electric railway running till midnight, but as the tracks run in the street in this part of Kamakura, there was permanent traffic noise all night.
