I enjoyed this little hotel because of its good service. Every morning a very nice breakfast with fruits in season and tasty cakes. The hotel has a small garden and is close to the beach. Fortunately in a quiet street just one block away from the main boulevard. It has a working WiFI service all over the hotel.

I've heard so much about the State of Bahia..so I treated myself to vacation there for my 30th birthday..and I am glad that I did!
I searched for hotels online and came across Hotel Papaya Verde. The site was very clear and the prices reasonable. I called and made a reservation. The receptionist was very friendly, Even though I do not speak much Portuguese, I was able to book my room.
A plus is that it is a short ride from the airport. Once I arrived I was greeted with smiling faces and fresh fruit. It was nice to see a hotel that still fresh fruit, cakes (made daily...I asked) , meat cheese and bread! A full spread. Before I grabbed my keys, I had a nibble. It was great. The hotel staff was very knowledgeable of the surrounding areas and islands..as well as the beaches, clubs, shopping areas and food.
I got a chance to meet both of the owner during breakfast.
They both were very nice and pleasant, and spoke English.
The rooms were cozy and cool. The garden is FANTASTIC. I got a good chance to read in the garden.
My stay was an A+.
Thanks Bahia. Thank you Hotel Papaya Verde...my 30 th was even more special!

I just returned yesterday from an amazing time in Salvador and one of the best highlights was my stay at Pousada Papaya Verde. At first I did not know what to expect considering the previous negative review but upon closer examination it sounds like the writer was mostly upset about the taxi fiasco at the airport and not the pousada itself. I absolutely loved my stay at Papaya Verde, everything from the breakfast, rooms, and staff was perfect. The rooms are comfortable with a ceiling fan and air conditioning available. I found that the air conditioning can be too strong even and there were nights I woke up at turned it off completely, so you need not be worried the air conditioning is inadequate The garden area is beautiful with many different types of plants and I even got to see a small monkey in a tree!

The breakfast was wonderful with many options ranging from cheese, ham, 2 types of delicious cakes (one flavored with maracuja juice for extra flavor when I was there), tapioca, cinnamon bananas, freshly made empanadas, a delicious Bahian farina dish with coconut juice, fruits, strong coffee and fresh fruit juices. The entire breakfast (i.e. cakes, empanadas, etc) is made the night before by a lovely woman named Ana and if you are awake around 3-4am you will smell the aromas coming from the kichen. The location of the pousada is very close to the famous Lighthouse which makes it easy to reference to taxis and buses when you are getting around.

Though this is not the fanciest hotel you will find in Salvador, it has everything you will need for a comfortable stay and as fast WiFi access was a priority for me, I am happy to report I had no internet problems the entire time I was there. Moreover, I must add that the pousada has a lot of heart with the way it is run and I felt immediately at home, rather than having icy and distant interactions you may have at other hotels. The entire staff was extremely helpful however I would like to highlight most of all Ana and Luciano, the manager. Both went out of their way on a couple of occasions to make my stay more enjoyable and worthwhile (they even gave me music recommendations!) and I believe it is because of the way hotel is run they know to hire such wonderful and thoughtful people. As I said before, the hotel may not be Salvador's fanciest but it is an excellent value considering the service is of the highest quality you could find. Please also try a capirinha, they make an excellent one there.

All in all, I cannot rave enough about my experience and I usually only post commentaries online when I have something to complain about. I certainly want to return to Salvador, and when I do it will go straight to this pousada from the airport. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me, I believe Trip Advisor has a way worked out.

Best Regards and with high hopes of returning!

Veronica

We got interested in this pousada through friends who visited this place before. So we contacted the owners who really quick and friendly respond our email. They also offered to sent a taxi for a lower price then the regular cab drivers. So the really nice typical brasilian cabdriver brought us to the pousada. On the way to the pousada he told us directly some do's and dont's in the center of Salvador. The pousada had a small reception but a friendly employee and the owners gave us a 'warm' welcome. They also gave us so many advices of places we could visit and they also booked a nightbus for us to Chapada Diamantina and let the tickets be delivered at the pousada. Before we went to Lencois, Marco phoned for us to a really nice pousada over there where we could stay for a couple of days and we paid also less money then the rest of the guests because of Marco's phonecall! And he gave us many more suggestions for nice and cheap pousada in the region of Bahia.
After our trip in Bahia we returned to Pousada Papaya Verde because of the service to spent our last 3 days in Barra. The 2 owners also have a beautysalon in the neighbourhood so we also got a great massage and fine manicure/pedicure by nice women who knows what they are doing!
The rooms are big and the bed is quit new so no holes (like in all other pousada we visited!), the bathroom is very clean and we loved the airconditioning!!!
We spend in total 7 days at Pousada Papaya Verde and I can recommend this place to all people who love a nice, brandnew hotel with nice rooms, good breakfast, beautiful garden and above all.. good service from the very friendly owners!!!!!
Marco and Wensley, thanks for the great time we had in your pousada!!

Pousada Papaya Verde.
Although the place looks attractive from the outside, the service of the place is very very poor. It's obvious that the the two owners never ever had any hospitality training or any experience in the hotel business before.
The nightmare started when we arrived at the airport in Salvador. We had arranged a transfer but when we arrived nobody was there to pick us up, when we called the place one of the owners was incredible arrogant, apparently we hadn't send them enough details of our flights, he didn't offer any help at all.
The lovely host did send us a message one day before we arrived in Salvador, to ask for more details, by then we where already somewhere in the outback of Brazil with no access to mail. Strange as i did send them our flight details weeks before we arrived in Brazil, they could have responded in time to let us know .
The room we had was small, uncomfortable and the bed hardly did fit two adults, at night it was hot as there was no possibility to let any fresh air in the space.
When we asked for some information one day it took one of he owners over an hour to come down, he made it very clear that he wasn't bothered to help us at all. Both owners are very unprofessional, their 'service' radiates trough the staff working for them. An absolute NO GO!

PousadaPapayaVerde, Owners Comment at Hotel Pousada Papaya Verde, responded to this reviewResponded 15 August 2008

dear visitors,
i was really surprised this morning receiving an e-mail from two of our regular guests from Germany, telling me about a quite negative review of our Hotel/Pousada here on this site.
My name is Marco Cecilio and i am the owner of the Pousada Papaya Verde. I have worked for several years in different hotels in Europe (Avenue Hotel Amsterdam, Hilton Hotel Amsterdam) before i decided to open my own hotel here in Salvador.
As I live above my hotel, the atmosphere of and in my "Home" and the treatment of my guests is from outmost importance to me.
We do not have our own pick-up service from the airport, but we offer our guests to be picked up by taxi for a special lower fee than the usual taxis charge.
Unfortunately it has happened before that the taxidriver was waiting at the airport for guests and did not find them, that is why we ask our guests to reconfirm their flights and pick-up by e-mail some days before arrival with all !!! necessay flight details.
All our 15 rooms have !!! windows , fan and air-condtioning, to definately provide fresh air to our guests, depending of the individual taste of the clients, we are in the tropics after all and the air is hot and humid if you just open the window.
All our rooms have standard singlesize
(1 person) or queensize (2 persons) box-spring beds of the highest quality (Orthobom).

Unfortunately it is not possible to please all clients 100%, but we are definately trying our best to do so and are very happy to already have, after only 2 1/2 years, a big circle of regular customers who enjoy very much to return and stay with us.

with kind regards,
Marco Cecilio Schoneborn
