“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2011

We stayed in the Nega Maluca for about a week and totally loved it. The owners treat you like family. They were very helpful in booking transportation of all kinds and recommending places to eat and things to do and see. Breakfast was great. The common areas are charming. Everything was clean and neat. The location is perfect.

I was in Brazil a few years ago and landed in Salvador airport on a stormy and rainy night. I was lucky because I heard from a friend I met while traveling about a cool hostel named Nega Maluca which is located at a great location - the entrance to Pelourinho - the historic center of the city. I took a taxi and arrived to the hostel and found it indeed as my friend said cool, lively and happy.
I stayed there for 10 days and made my day trips from there with the help of the crew and the owner.
Now, a few years later I returned to Salvador. Went again to the Nega Maluca and stayed there for 4 nights. I was happy to realize that the place looks the same, feels the same( even if some of the crew members I remember are not there) and still maintains all the quality of an excellent hostel.

The hostel has atmospher, the hamocks at the balcony are lovely, really clean hostel.
Breakfast is the best i've had in south america.
All the staff speak english.
The location is perfect, close enough to walk to the historic center but far enough from the noise and music so you can still get a good night of sleep. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!

I stayed here just before Carnival.
The owner is very rude. People walking into the dorms in the middle of the night drunk and very loud.

The location near Pelo is great and the guesthouse is nicely decorated with some great travel shots from around the world.
Unfortunately, it wasn't very clean. The first night, our bed had fleas in it because the previous occupants had their dog in the room with them (!!!).
We moved to a dorm, which we had to ourselves for 3 nights and that was convenient.
The bathrooms always smelled though, and my husband found one of those long red worms near the drain in a shower.
One of the staff members was surly and didn't know anything, but the two others were great and we were even able to book flights through the owner and a very small surcharge.
Overall, it was an ok experience.

the hostel is located in the old part of town and so can be dangerous late at night if walking around. however the hostel itself it very cosy with hammocks on the roof terace etc. The staff are friendly and keen to help but can be a bit distraced by each other, they seem like they are having fun, but not really working! the kitchen is small but has all you need. the breakfast is good too.

We booked a private room with ensuite at the Nega Maluca based on good reviews we had read. Unfortunately when we got there we were shown to a fairly claustrophobic room that smelled of a mixture between mould and wet dog. The bed sheet was pretty dirty - we found hair, dog footprints and even a tooth pick on the bed!

On the bright side the communal areas were pretty good (nice patio, kitchen - just a little dirty - and good free internet), and the people who run the hostel appear to be nice. However we couldn't sleep in that bed so we ended up forfeiting our one night's deposit and finding another place.

If the managers read this review - maybe you shouldn't let your dog lie on the bed after you've cleaned the room?
