Bahia Othon Palace
Ranked #22 of 110 Hotels in Salvador
Reviewed 20 August 2014

I have been to Salvador many times but this was my first time at Bahia Othon.
The hotel is in a very good location, it’s a little bit dated, but very clean.
I have booked the DELUXE OCEANFRONT ROOM, so I supposed oceanfront would be with a nice sea view.
The check in was at 3 pm and we got there at 3 pm, but they didn’t have the room ready. They didn’t even apologized !
As the booking says DELUXE OCEANFRONT ROOM we wanted what we bought. The room we were given had a very little of the sea view and not oceanfront, so I went to the reception asked for what I have booked. They told me that they don’t sell any oceanfront room, so I showed the booking paper and I have booked in the hotel website. After a long discussion they gave us the room, that was oceanfront and with a lovely sea view.
On the first night we had dinner in the hotel in the bar area and was served by a lovely lady wearing “Baiana” costume, she was so lovely and her service was the best we had in Salvador. We went to have drinks every night and the lady was always nice.
The other services in this hotel are not so nice. The reception gave as wrong information about internet in the room, and they charged us for each day.
The breakfast is ok, nothing special.

Room Tip: If you book a oceanfront room and they don’t give you a room with nice sea view ask for it !

Stayed here for 3 nights during the World Cup.

As many of the other reviews note, this place, while prominent in the area, is not close to anything else. The good news is that every taxi driver seems to know where it is, but that is probably because the place feels like it's been there since the 50s. The rooms certainly give that vibe as everything was old, from the wicker chairs to the 10in CRT television (which, by the way, had built in knock-off versions of 80s arcade games, whaaaat)

The first morning I awoke to ants on my pillow, and after consulting with the front desk, housekeeping was able to do a cleanup. The ants did not return the following few days, but the concern was still in my mind.

Still managed to get a few nights of good rest, and the view of the ocean is certainly amazing. However, unless all you want to do is stare at the ocean for days at a time, you'll need to walk quite a ways or grab a cab to most attractions.

The breakfast at the hotel was fairly good, with your typical selection of breads, cold cuts, fruits, and a few hot dishes.

If you can find hotels closer to the main tourist areas, I'd certainly recommend that, but if you decide on this place for price reasons, do be aware of the negatives.

One final tip for transport from the airport: For whatever the reason, the metered cab was cheaper than the pre-set price for the journey. Not sure if you can get a metered cab on the way from the hotel though...

This is a huge hotel with magnificent ocean view from the room. However, the rooms need serious updating. The air conditioning is very noisy, giving you the selection of ice cold or too hot.
Balcony door won't close, so you should count on some noise from the ocean as well (charming for the first 5 hours of the night...)

Wi-fi is non existing, even in the lobby area. Staff seemed friendly, but very little english was spoken.
The breakfast was amazing, but the room service dinner was below average.

The pool area is nice, but there is no real beach access in close proximity. Also, bear in mind that you are in the middle between Rio Vermelho and Barra, so you'll probably be doing a lot of taxi or walking.

Checking in and out was very quick, even during the World Cup. Room was large, with a king bed and a single bed (2 adults and one child). Mattress on the king bed was very hard, awful pillows. Room needs to be updated really bad, furniture and closet were very old. AC working fine. Shower OK. No wi fi at all in my bedroom (606). Even had difficulties connecting in the lobby and the restaurant. Breakfast was fine in both mornings. The restaurant was packed on the first day and service didn't keep up with demand. Ok on the second day, restaurant was emptier. Did not walk around, use pool or beach, tight schedule.

Very unimpressed with this place. There is no beach. There is a TINY beach about 5 minutes walking distance. Not really worth visiting compared to the beaches in Salvador. There are no restaurants, convenience stores or grocery stores in walking distance either. So you are at the mercy of the hotel restaurant, which is decent, I have to say. Still, I don't want to spend all my time in the hotel. The pool is just average...nothing to write home about. Customer service in general was fine. The WIFI in the rooms (which they charge you 20 reales a day (about $9 US) is HORRIBLE. It disconnected continually, streaming any kind of a video was impossible. They even changed my room because of the poor wifi, but it did not help much. If a hotel is charging for WIFI it should be lightning fast. The only good thing about this place is the view. If you have an ocean view room, it is great. You also have city views which are nice. Other than that, very bad experience. I will never stay here again or recommend the place.

Recent reviews of this property are quite descriptive and fair. Just to add: a beautiful sand beach is just a few steps down the safe street just past some upscale local shops including two nice quick restaurants and a bakery. Banks and a pharmacy are a short walk. The large, upscale Barra mall with shops and great dining is just a short taxi ride away. An enjoyable beachfront experience on a very attractive stretch of ocean right in a good part of town.

We had a nice stay here while in Salvador. Rooms are an average size. We were on a high floor in the corner so had an excellent view from multiple angles. The breakfast was awesome! Loads of tropical fruit and other items. The pool was also great. The hotel is on a rocky section of beach so no swimming there. We were lucky enough to see a Candomblé ceremony from our window below by the water.
Hotel was a short ride by taxi to the Mercado Market and elevator to Pelhourino.
