“Kind staff - but poor facilities”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

This is a "hotel" where the owners are clearly "cash cowing" - miking every Real without putting anything back. The only good think was the hard work and care of the staff - and the breakfast. The rooms on the north side (street) are very noisy - avoid. The air conditioning has not been upgraded and is weak and sounds like a Harley Davidson in the room - so you have the choice of not sleeping but being sort of cool or partly sleeping and being covered in sweat. When we were there there was a flood from a burst pipe in another floor - water poured out of the ceiling and into people's rooms and the lift. Breakfast is good, with a nice view of the sea - and the pool is swimmable, unlike the sea. Owners of the Hotel - spend some money on maintenance and thank goodness you have the staff you have - they are your best asset

Staff is friendly and tries to be helpful despite lack of english, good security, nice pool and bar over looking beach, good breakfast buffet at hotel restaurant near pool, mix of shops and another restaurant at lower level (unfortunately neither restaurant stands as special just typical)

Rooms all have kitchenettes and 1 or 2 bedrooms, and 1 or 2 baths but quality can vary greatly because some if not most are individually owned but managed/book by the hotel administration or independently by the owners themselves or outside agencies. The building is large several hundred units of varying sizes and over 25 years old so the room quality can vary greatly depending on whether the owner has invested in renovating over the years and building overall is starting to show its age.

Located on a busy street that is a Carnaval route but street noise not much of an issue especially with rooms face ocean.

Building Wi-Fi generally works but is temperamental. Building has backup diesel generator for elevator and other essentials during the inevitable local power outage.

Many buses and taxis available in front.

Great breakfasts, great value for money, and great uninterrupted sea views from the restaurant and pool deck. Very friendly staff. Spacious apartments. Rather noisy aircon. Good location between town centre and Rio Vermelho (try the fish market for great local eating). Easy access to buses and taxis. A bit far from any food shops.

We stayied at Ondina Aparthotel for four days - I was attending a conference on Othon Palace, next door, and brought my family to enjoy a bit of Salvador. Ondina Aparthotel is far from be a luxury hotel, but it´s quite comfortable. Reserving through internet, we got a 2-room apartment with two bathrooms, living room and kitchen by R$ 225 = US$ 130 / day (four people occupancy with breakfast included) - a good deal, considering the supposedly discounted prices for conference attendees at neighbooring Othon.

The rooms were large, with good illumination and ventilation; both had air conditioning, as well as the living room (which is a must in Salvador). Altough comfortable and well kept, the apartment could receive some renovation: the decoration and furniture is a bit old. Also, we found our apartment a bit noisy since it was facing the avenue (ocean-facing apartments certainly are quieter, and the view should be amazing; but they charge ca. 25 % more for them and we did not think it would be worth the extra expense).

Buffet breakfast was excellent: a good assortment of fresh fruit, breads, cold and hot beverages. Also, they can prepare omelets and tapioca (a local crepe made from cassava starch) on custom demand.

Although the beach can be reached directly from hotel, it´s better enjoy the hotel´s pool: the beach is a bit dirty, rocky and crowded on weekends. Alas, the pool bar opens from 8AM to 5PM, but their choice of beverages is somehow limited (we enjoyed a delicious cashew "caipirinha", though). As for other attractions, the Barra region is within walking distance - for people with good legs, at least... To visit the old Pelourinho district, a ~R$20 - 25 (US$ 11 to 14) taxi ride is necessary.

The hotel also dubs as residential building and as a mini-shopping mall: there are some stores In the street floor, as well as a decent pay-as-you-eat buffet restaurant (much better and cheaper than the hotel´s restaurant properly), a cafe, a car rental office and some clothing stores. Outside the hotel, there is a snack hut for those brave enough to take the risk - my wife enjoyied a huge hamburger with sidings, and she´s still alive...

Employees were consistently corteous and polite; for example, the concierge man extended our check out time for three hours, to let us have some time to rest before going back to airport.

I´d say that its an OK hotel: good price, good service, reasonably comfortable... a solid 3 1/2 "green balls", if this would be possible.

I attended a conference in Salvador for five days (it was held at the Bahia Othon Palace next door) in July 2006. I brought my family along, and was glad to have stayed at this less-expensive, perfectly serviceable alternative.

The hotel has a good breakfast buffet that comes with the room, a (not-heated, but you're in Brazil) pool, and it's right on the ocean, with a beach adjacent. Our room turned out, unexpectedly, to be a spacious suite -- it is an ApartHotel after all, I suppose -- with a kitchen and two bedrooms. Furnishings were spare but comfortable.

The staff was competent and well-intentioned, but no English is spoken, and they do not have the concierge services you would expect from a place that rates more stars. The little Portuguese we learned to supplement "pretty good" Spanish was helpful. (They could explain where to find a grocery store, but when Varig cancelled our flights home, they could not really advise us in any way we could understand.)

Note that this hotel is in Ondina with a slew of other beach hotels. You are not in the middle of things. This is not a charming little hotel in the historic district; that's a cab ride away. (They can be found on the Internet, but not on tripadvisor. It's an adventure! We recommend both.) Buses do go right in front of this hotel -- even to the airport -- but unless you have a lot of time, expect to pay US$10 or more for a cab when you want to go somewhere other than this beach.

  • Liked — Less expensive, big room, close to meeting, right on the beach
  • Disliked — Far from Salvador's cultural center
  • Tips/Secrets — The walk to the lighthouse (Farol) is good.
