“Great place to mix with the locals”

Praia do Porto da Barra

Attraction details
Owner description: Porto da Barra is one of the few points of land in Brazil that face west over the Atlantic Ocean (due to its unique geography near the entrance to the Bay of All Saints). Because of this, Porto da Barra Sundown Show features sunsets which are both spectacularly beautiful and endearing because of the way people (visitors and local residents alike) applaud, cheer, whistle and sing while the sun sets over the sea. Porto da Barra Sundown Show also features various styles of live music at world-famous Hot Dougie's Rendezvous on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The water at Porto da Barra Beach is quite calm and perfect for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, ad and other water sports. Even on days when other beaches in Salvador are empty, there is typically a good crowd at Porto da Barra Beach. Porto da Barra also features Portuguese forts (recently renovated as multimedia museums) dating back to the 17th century and number of good restaurants, bars, shops including used book and record stores, and a State of Bahia agency which promotes the production and sale of quality hand-made artisan products, and others.

“Great place to mix with the locals”
Reviewed 8 November 2013

Porto da Barra is a cool place for mixing with the locals. If you want to really experience Bahian happiness, I suggest spending a day on the beach here, away from the more touristy areas. Look for the "shrimp" man. He walks up and down the beach peddling the best camarou (sp?) in lime juice. Christmas Eve 2012 sitting on the beach at Porto da Barra eating fried fish, drinking caprinha and enjoying a beautiful sunset in 90 degree weather is one of my favorite memories. Try it; you'll like it!

“Great beach but careful not to overpay!”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

We were a bit naive and went for the first beach stand we came across. The guy charged us R$40 for a couple of chairs and umbrella, which almost certainly was way over the odds even for a pair of gringos!

Saying that, the beach is awesome. A real Brazilian beach, full of life and fun and sun tans.

Sea is extremely strong so careful not to swim too far.

“Porto da Barra”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

Great place to run in the morning, awesome sunsets, and great people-watching at the (small, crowded, chaotic) beach.

There is a museum in the lighthouse but I didn't go in -- I believe there is a fee.

“Great Sunsets!”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

This beach is very popular for locals and tourist alike. Yes, the location is great too. However, the large crowds can prove to be a major deterrent, especially on the weekends. Local vendors are always selling food and beer on the beach, so you don't have to leave the beach to get some very good snack foods; like grilled shrimp. The better beach in this area is Ondina beach located in a much better area near Farol da Bara (Barra Lighthouse). If you like sunsets Barra beach is for you!

“The best beach to swim in Salvador”
Reviewed 30 July 2013 via mobile

It's a democratic beach. You will see people from every group: rich people on theirs boats, some athletic ones swimming or playing foot volley, some people consuming maconha and many other people looking at and appreciating the view, the water, and everything else. A HINT: DON'T FORGET TO USE SUNBLOCK FPS 50 if you are not black people. If you don't use it, maybe you gonna loose some days of your trip.
