The setting seems magical at night but don't be deceived: something is rotten here. The food wasn't bad but things went downhill when we received the bill. First, they charged $BR 134 for a wine that was listed as $BR 92, which could have been an innocent mistake or they were just used to overcharging the denizens of Trancoso. But they are also charged $BR148 for what was supposed to be a combined shrimp and fish dish for our children ($BR78 for shrimp and $BR80 for fish so we expected an average of $BR79). The chef came out and yelled at us and insisted he had used prawns, which was ridiculous as these were tiny shrimp. We cook these all the time and know the difference between prawns and shrimp. (It turns out that the difference in price is supposedly because the shrimp are frozen and the prawns are fresh--something not made clear on the menu.) In any case we never would have ordered prawns for our 13 year old daughter. We have certainly never experienced a situation in which the cook and/or the restaurant insisted the customer was wrong.
We paid the full amount as our waitress was in tears about the fact that she would have to make up the difference--and she only gets a share of the 10 percent service charge in tips and lives off the scraps of the food not eaten by the customers. No one should patronize such a sleazy establishment.
