“Tranquility in trendy Trancoso”
Reviewed 26 August 2008

Hotel da Praca is a small likeable pousada in the shade of tall mango trees just off the quadrado, the heart of Trancoso. The town sits on a plateau about 50m above glorious coconut palm-fringed tropical beaches and the quadrado is a preserved grassy area about the size of a football pitch with an old colonial 16thC church at the sea end. There are some hotels, restaurants and lots of small boutique shops around it and there are more hotels down by the beach. In Summer (December to February) Trancoso is full of ‘super-cool’ people. In August you have the place to yourself.

Should you stay up in the village or down on the beach? It is a 10-15 minute walk down the road by the church and along the board-walk through the mangrove swamp, where red crabs scuttle away below you. Then you reach the sea (turn right for the restaurants and the best beaches). We thought that up was better than down. The walk is not hard and it gives you more choices of activity and eating in the evenings.

So the location of the Hotel da Praca suited us. Our room had a tiny bedroom upstairs with a mosquito net over the bed, steep wooden spiral stairs and a small sitting room and bathroom downstairs. Like many Brazilian hotels and airports, it has cold water and no plug in the washbasin (bring one with you) and you put toilet paper in the bin, but we were already used to all three. The shower was hot, decoration of smart bright fabrics and prints and breakfast was good, though they could do with an English translation of the breakfast menu (the first morning, they brought everything I pointed to). Service varied from puzzled to friendly depending on the individual and our combined language skills. The restaurant’s ceviche was delicious. They have a library of DVDs and they let us sit in the office one evening and watch a film on a huge screen. Most important, their Caipirinhas are excellent!

  • Liked — Location was good for evenings and choice of beaches.
  • Disliked — Bedroom was small and staircase steep

Hotel da Praca has a beautiful garden setting right on the Quadrado in Trancoso. This is a good location to sample the restaurants and shops in town while being an easy walk down to the beach. Rooms are colorfully decorated and the beds have mosquito netting. It has a very tropical feel. The hotel is fairly simple - bathroom sink only has cold water, toilet paper must be disposed of in a pail in the bathroom, so this might not be right for people who expect more. The hotel provides a great breakfast with fruit, pastry, eggs or french toast cooked to order, in a beautiful open air restaurant/bar.

We booked the Hotel da Praca on the Quadrado in Trancoso for four nights during our trip to Bahia in Dec. 2007. We were traveling with young children (5 and under), which limits options since many of the pousadas are not especially child friendly. During repeated calls, this hotel billed itself to us as child-friendly, and although it lacked a pool, we were told by the hotel staff that we were only "minutes" from the beach. It was only after we checked in that we found out the rooms were far from being child friendly - they're very small and cooped up and the internal staircase was an invitation to disaster! And the beach was at least 20 minutes walk away for their little feet! Because of its steepness, it was an even longer schlep on the way back. Plus, even though we were paying pretty hefty rates because of the Christmas holiday season premium, the hotel did not have the courtesy to offer shampoo/conditioner or body lotion in the ultra basic bathrooms!

The staff were not especially knowledgeable (nearly all we encountered here were transients working a part-time gig for a few weeks to support themselves over vacation while availing of Trancoso's hip party scene at night). Nothing wrong with that of course, but the real limitation was the lack of attention and oversight by the property's owners. Moreover, it appeared that the staff are being coached to intentionally misguide hotel guests who inquire about pool facilities. We were told that none of the pousadas around the quadrado have this facility, and that there are only 2 pools in the area - Club Med and Estrelas d'Aguas, both of which are a good taxi distance away and pricey! Meanwhile, a little walk around the Quadrado (which itself is marvelous esp in the evenings) revealed to us that there were no less than 3-4 other establishments with lovely pools!!!

Travelers with children, beware! This is definitely not the place it pretends to be. We checked out after 1 night, and moved to another place we uncovered right on the beach, which in spite of its plain name (Bahia Bonita Beach Club) was lovely and welcoming! As it turns out, we had a lovely beach holiday, but Hotel da Praca definitely led to a sour start!

  • Liked — Its location on the Quadrado
  • Disliked — Owners don't appear to care about some of the basic rules of service or amenities.
