When I went last time to Belo Horizonte in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais I visited once more the Pampulha complex, which is a set of buildings around a artificial lake representing the architectural style called “Modernism”.

In Brazil the main representative architect from that style is Oscar Niemeyer. The main buildings around Pampulha lake were design by Niemeyer yet during beginning of his career, before his work as the architect of Brazilian capital, Brasilia. The complex is located in the area of the same name and was inaugurated in 43, when the later Brazilian president JK (who built Brasilia) was yet mayor of the city of Belo Horizonte.

The most impressive building I considered in the complex is the “Sao Francisco de Assis” church. It has a building made in a way that his roof seems like waves. That gives a nice movement to the building and illustrates well what was later the main characteristic of Niemeyer´s designs.
The blue and white panels covering the façade of the church are preciously done by Candido Portinari, one of the most important Brazilian painters. Inside the church there is mural also done by Portinari. This set is considered one of the most important works from him.

The building was not well received from the local Catholic Church, which took 17 years to recognised the possibility of the building to be used for its purpose for cults.

Although it is possible to see that some restoration is being done, it is sad to see the poor state of conservation of the many buildings of the complex.

Great setting, right on the lake. A little tricky to find at first and like a few attractions in belo Horizonte, easiest to have a car. Was interesting to look at but is a real shame. Like other attractions in particular niemeyer buildings it's starting to fall apart. A bit of tlc and would be a pearl again.

When walking around the Lagoa da Pampulha you will see a number of eye catching buildings, The beautiful mansions, the Museum of Art, few classic country clubs but nothing compares to this church. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer , this exotic looking structure has a Portinari painting inside. The church no longer works as intended but it can be visited . It has beautiful views to the Pampulha Lake and its right in front of a cute amusement park , which has been there for many generations.

This is a very different church to the normal ones you'll find. Especially the many in Ouro Preto. It's much more modern in style and has some great art work around it. It's also situated in a nice location by the lagoon with lots of greenery around and just a stones throw from the stadium.
