There are places in this world where the 70’s have never ended. One of these places is the Bristol Carima in Foz de Iguacu. I think the interior designer has a budget of only 5 pesos a year and is waiting desperately until the 70’s come back into fashion. In this monster of a resort we stayed in room 1900. Through wide halls with dark wooden floors we reached our room and were blinded by all the neonlight that could easily light a stadium. It was the first time during our holiday that we were tired enough to have diner in the hotel. Wrong choice. There was even more neonlight in the dining room and although the food was not very bad, I wanted to leave that room after 5 minutes.

Reception staff: Reception staff did not inform us that summertime was starting and the night would be one hour shorter, even though we had a flight the following day. Reception staff did not help me at all when I asked them to call my Brazilian speaking travel agency about the transfer to the airport. Reception staff arranged us a Brazilian non-communicative private driver, when we asked for a English-speaking talkative one. They did not even speak enough English to start a normal dialogue, reception staff was shameful, even the waiters in the restaurant had better knowledge of English.

Bristol Carima has it’s glorydays many years behind them. I would not even stay here again if they gave me a 100% discount. The staff was worthless, no internet access whatsoever, neonlight and hopeless oldfashioned furniture as far as the eye can see. This hotel is a joke, but I am not laughing!

We have stayed in Foz three other times, and this is the worst hotel we have been in. I imagine it was quite a tremendous place at one time, but it appears that most of the original furnishings (including mattresses and linens) have never been replaced. The floor was so poor, we had to put down blankets to walk on to keep from getting any more splinters. Someone was varnishing doors in our hall and the fumes made us all sick. After requesting another room, we were moved around the corner. Heat doesn't work in most rooms (we were booked with a group of 25) and their experience was the same as ours. Stay somewhere else until the Carima decides to move into this century.

We arrived in the Carima hotel to stay there for about 3 nights and the whole experience was great.Great staff, friendly, spacious room with mini bar and complete bathroom including hairdryer.A special thanks for the guy who runs the tourist info in the lounge.Very helpful and friendly.
The breakfast room was a bit old fashioned but the buffet was splendid.
The dinner room was classic but again the buffet was great so was the a la carte menu. And you should try the Argentian wines.
the swimming pool is big with lots of chairs around it and lots of trees and plants.

The garden is wonderful to walk in but the animal part is a bit "left alone".

Great hotel and great situated very well to see the falls and the tropical garden.

Aside from the fact the hotel is operating in a bizarre 1970s time warp, it also has more fundamental problems.

The rooms appeared clean on first glance, but by the second night seemed to have been taken over by mites, including the bed - I ended up bitten all over the place. Add to that the fact that the bedroom window barely opened, and was almost completely blacked out by a shutter, and the fact that the bathroom window was permanently wedged open, and a very noisy and inefficient air conditioning unit - the room really wasn't great.

Note that I was in a downstairs room - by other accounts (including a fellow guest in my own group) the upstairs rooms were considerably better (same air-con problems though).

The hotel is huge - bit of a maze to find your way around - but despite this the restaurant didn't seem able to cope with groups. Our wine finally arrived after we had finished eating, and they couldn't provide separate bills for each guest (they wouldn't charge it to our rooms).

On the cosmetic side, the hotel really gets strange - 1970s decor throughout, and doesn't appear to have been modernised at all. Odd sculptures everywhere, starkly white rooms with wooden panelled ceilings.

Two things on the plus side - a very nice, large pool, actually good for swimming. And it is pretty cheap. So if you can stand the downsides, and get an upstairs room, this place is OK. But I'm sure there are better hotels around.....

  • Liked — Great pool
  • Disliked — Poor rooms - noisy aircon, weird decor and mite problem.
  • Tips/Secrets — Definitely state you want an upstairs room.

I have been to the carima hotel for two days to see the falls in february 06 and I found the hotel magnificent, wery large, spacious and well decorated with brasilian pictures and sculptures. The rooms was clean and agreable, spacious. Food is very excellent, composed of brasilian specialities and a large choice of dishes. We were very satisfied.

I came here for 3 days to see the falls.

The hotel room I had was huge & had a great view, the room was clean and I had no complaints, cleans sheets with no holes.

I liked the pool and the peacocks walking around the place, the breakfast was average and the buffet dinner was good.

The staff were not amazing, but I had a good time at the Carima.
