“Great views, great pool, great way to relax”
Reviewed 9 December 2007

My wife and I went on a belated honeymoon to Iguacu as she always had the dream of seeing the falls. We were mainly drawn to the hotel as it was the only one in the park on the Brazilian side, and the only one that had a great view of the falls themselves. We have to admit that we were slighly apprehensive due to some of the less complimentary reviews on this site, however we could not have made a better decision.

We had a falls view room and it was incredible. The falls, as a site of natural wonder, have only a few places on earth that could rival them for majesty and beauty - so falling asleep and waking up to them every morning is a thrill that has to be experienced.

The hotel, we felt, really sympathetic to its environment. Its rooms are very colonial in feel - slightly old fashioned and with a predominance of wood - but this is totally commensurate with living in the middle of a rain forest!! The pool is great, so if you want to have a long soak with a few cocktails to wind down from the rigours of everyday work or from a hectic day's sightseeing then you really cannot go wrong. The swallows also enjoy it, and it is really great to watch them swooping down to get a drink.

We cannot comment on the quality of the a la carte restaurant as we did not try it, but the buffet was great.

This was part of a grand tour of Brazil. I was impressed with the fact
that this was inside the park itself allowing you to see the falls by moonlight. Iguasu Falls are spectacular and not to be missed if you are given the opportunity to go!! Also go to the Argentina side which offers more to do and to the nearby town of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay to see what a chaotic lower-income latin american city is like!

I'm surprised by the other reviews of this hotel. Based on the reviews, we were expecting a mediocre hotel. We were pleasantly surprised. Frankly, I thought the room was very nice. And as for the view - who cares! Why anyone would find it necessary to pay for the view is beyond me. You should be out in the falls, not sitting in your room looking at them!

The hotel was great, including the amenities. We even found blank DVDs and CDs to back up our photos on the computers in their business center :)

I highly recommend this hotel - it is worth the money.

Booking through the hotel's website, we stayed for one night on 9 October 2007. Perhaps the highlight of our stay was the fact that we were able to have the falls to ourselves early the next day with NOBODY around! We ate breakfast at 6:30am and by 7am we were off on foot enjoying the best nature had to offer. With the hotel being the only one located INSIDE the national park in Brazil, we were able to beat the other tourists.

The room was nice and large, but when we arrived, we did not get the double bed we ordered. However, the front desk attendant was kind and polite and said that the housekeeping would remedy the situation by putting the beds together. However, there was still some discomfort from the two mattresses being joined together. The room's amneties were complete from sandals to bathrobes to fresh fruits. And we found the bathroom to be clean and modern. However, the small and old TV definitely needed upgrading.

The worst part about the hotel was the fact that you had to pay if you wanted to use the old-style safe in the room. For a USD300 a night hotel, we thought this kind of policy was inappropriate and unacceptable.

The breakfast was complete but we found the taste of the food to be ordinary.

When we return to Iguazu someday, we would probably try the Sheraton on the Argentinian side, another hotel which is located inside a national park. The boat rides from the Argentinian side are much cheaper; additionally, the trails on the Argentinian side are much longer and bigger. Finally, the view to the falls is arguably more beautiful than the Brazillian side.

There is no doubt that this is the place to stay if you are visiting the Brazilian side of Iguasu Falls and if you can afford it - you are right by the falls! I would disagree with a previous correspondent as I think it will need at least two days to visit the falls properly. You really should also see them from the Argentine side; this can be arranged at the hotel.

This grand old hotel has style and charm with lots of dark wood and leather. The pool is good and the gardens beautiful. The restaurant food was OK and there is also a barbecue/buffet by the pool, which we tried but is mainly for package tours. The rooms are good and the staff helpful and charming...... and I say it again, you are right by the falls!

What I did not like was the hotel was over-run by package tours when I was there; most of which seem to for the over eighties - lots of people wandering around vacantly with their mouths open waiting either to be fed or put on a bus.

But overall the hotel played a key part in what was a very memorable experience.

I had read some mixed reviews about the Tropical Cataratas on this website but booked there anyhow, only to find that it is a charming, old-style hotel, with character and personality, good service, great grounds, and, of course, a fantastic view. At our request, the front desk moved us to a nice room with a clear view of the falls. The restaurant was a bit expensive but had great ambience. On the whole, if you like colonial style building with high ceilings and dark woods (but with modern amenities and bathrooms), you will love this place.

It is a trifle expensive, but Iguassu can be done in one day, so avoid the hassle and cost of commuting from town to the falls. Instead, spend yr money on the Tropical Cataratas.
