“Breathtaking falls at the doorstep”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

This is the only hotel in the National Park, and the Iguazu falls are just within view. Fantastic location of the most breathtaking falls, and without masses of tourists when the park closes to everyone else except hotel guests. The falls are indescribably majestic, even when the amount of water while we were there was only a tenth of the normal volume, and a must-do which cannot be missed. Really worth the extra expense. Beautifully decorated hotel with lovely colourful orchids that are changed daily. Well kept gardens with many birds and butterflies among the trees. We even managed to see a toucan on our last day. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Eating and lounging by the pool is great as one gets given regular tidbits and cool towels, although we preferred to take in the beauty of the falls than spend too much time lounging by the pool. The choice at breakfast is huge, and there is even champagne if one is so inclined! One can have dinner watching the sunset over the falls in the restaurant, so do ask for an outside table in the balcony when you book. The BBQ meat in the buffet restaurant was disappointing as it tended to be dry and overcooked, especially when we were looking forward to some good Brazilian beef.

If you want to visit Iguazu without the crowds and enjoy the serenity of the place, this is for you. The best thing is to be able to go for a morning walk and touch the waterfalls without anyone stamping on your foot or asking you to take a picture. In the evening it was so peaceful to watch the sunset with only you and the waterfalls. It was the highlight of my stay! Try to visit Itaipu dam and the bird park. They are quite close attractions and well worth it.

If you're going to splurge, stay here. You'll be treated like royalty, with complimentary Havianas (flip flops), complimentary water, nightly turndown service, extremely friendly staff, and direct access to the falls. A full day (ie 2 nts) is enough time to see it all, but expect to pay around $750 USD daily for room and meals.

Wonderful location being the only Hotel in the Park, so that you can have the Falls to yourselves early morning, late evening .
To really enjoy this hotel you need to ensure that you do not have a room at the back of the Hotel overlooking car parks or staff facilities , do not eat in the buffet style restaurant. The buffet was excellent, ambience was nil, the chef looking after the BBQ style meat, spoke little English and did not make you aware as to what was on offer. The meat was also very disappointing considering the reputation of Argentinian meat, dried out., too long on the spit.
This of course will cost you to avoid.....
Relaxing by the pool was different altogether. Heaven. Free snacks and sun lotion constantly being offered the pool staff.

Room Tip: A good room will cost you. So therefore the addage, "You pays your money, you takes your choic...

This hotel could be a paradise; nice rooms and buildings, beautiful gardens, and above all the falls just for you after 6:00 PM !

But in regards to the cost and the image of this hotel, several serious issues happened during our 3 nights stay.

1 - the reception staff main task seems to give to the new arrivals the worst rooms on the back of the hotel with view on the maintenance department or so. However they patiently showed us several other alternatives for changing our first rooms (with an extra cost however, no free "upgrade" for a decent room, even if the hotel was not full).

2 - the fancy restaurant was closed during 2 evenings during our 3 nights stay. The other only option in this case was the pool side buffet which looks like a noisy, busy and cheap style casino "all you can eat" eatery with kids paying around and clients in jogging suits. Nothing fancy for the price in the large but banal choice and even the beef meat is dry, overcooked or burned , which is insane in this part of the world.
More, when we asked for a table outside, we were told that we had to make a reservation... When there no other option for the dinner 30 kilometers around!

3 - to avoid this trap we ask a shuttle + a taxi reservation at the gate of the national park (thay are not allowed to reach the hotel) + a booking in a local churrascaria in the far away local town Foz di Iguazu. Happily we double checked before leaving in the evening: the lady at the reception forgot to book the taxi and the restaurant.

4 - finally the last evening we called the reception (Tatiana was her name I think), the lady even asked me if I needed a second safety call 15 minutes later that I agreed ) for having an early awake call as we had to go to the Argentinean side for taking our flight. We awake by ourselves just a few minutes before the shuttle departure because they forgot to call us. Rush packing, rush check out, no breakfast, no shower and the only excuse at the reception was " you have not asked for a awake call".

Orient Express imperatively has to train again its staff . Never again Das Cataratas Hotel.

If you are on a budget save the money elsewhere and stay in the only hotel in the National Park in Brazil.
It is a wonderful place, the hotel, the staff, the food, and above all the ambience.
Get up at dawn and wander down to the falls - wait until dusk and wander down to the falls - by being in the National Park you can enjoy the experience before and after the crowds - there are not many places in the world where you can have that experience.
Having been to both Niagara Falls and Victoria Falls as an overall panorama of falling water Iguacu (or Iguazu if you're Spanish or even Iguassu if English is you're thing) tops them all and this hotel is certainly in keeping with that experience.

It is a beautiful hotel, the value is the location; it is worth to pay to have the Iguazu falls just for you for an early morning walk or for a sunset walk. Food: expect to pay about 180's reals per person at the restaurant with the falls view, about 120's reals at the buffet by the pool after 6 pm and at least 60 reals for lunch, big breakfast with good choices. Overprice tag for airport taxi 90 reals (take a taxi at airport yourself for only 30 reals, it is fast, and easy to get to hotel). Argentina side you can do it by yourself in a private taxi that could take you there and pick you up (if you are USA, Canadian don't forget to pay for the fee to enter Argentina $160 dollars and print the receipt before going that way). Staff was awesome and very attentive. Rooms are comfortable and beautiful. Very nice and peaceful pool area.
I would stay here again and would recommend the hotel to my friends.
