Belmond Hotel das Cataratas
Ranked #1 of 79 Hotels in Foz do Iguacu
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 December 2013

We had a fantastic 4-night stay at Das Cataratas over Christmas, during which we were blessed with blue skies for almost the whole time.

Being located in the Iguassu National Park, just a short walk away from the first viewpoint of the falls, the location could hardly be better. And being able to wander around before the Park opened and after it closed was a definite advantage, allowing us to avoid the crowds. (Apparently if you stay in the Sheraton in Argentina you are confined to the hotel after the Park shuts.)

The Das Cataratas would therefore be worth staying at if it were only average, but given the charm of the building itself and the standard of its facilities, I would put Das Cataratas in my Top 3 favourite hotels in the whole world based on the quality of the hotel itself combined with its location.

(If you're interested, the others in my Top 3 are The Royal Livingstone on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, and Hayman Island in the Whitsundays. Chateau Lake Louise might also be up there, but although I have been there more than once for lunch, I have yet to stay, so can't pass judgement.)

Das Cataratas is truly exceptional. The location is unmatched for visiting the falls as you can walk to them in 5 minutes and avoid the crowds by visiting outside the park hours. The building is picture postcard Agatha Christie colonial hotel, immaculately restored. The food is fantastic. What flaws does it have? The rooms are on the small side but a price well worth paying for the overall experience. It isn't cheap but you most certainly get full value for what you are paying. It is unquestionably the place to stay if you can afford it

This was our first trip to South America and what a trip it was. Iguazu waterfalls and hotel were highlights of this trip. Unbeatable service levels, great food . .. and views. Difficult to think of anything that was not perfect. Only regret that we were there only few days before full moon that was supposed to be unbelievable… well … certainly a good excuse to come back! Strong recommendation to stay in this hotel, even if prices look steep - experience and memories worth every penny.

Room Tip: if you have a chance please plan a visit during full moon

We debated this rating quite a lot between the two of us.....

Enjoyed the stay and staff generally were out to please. Worth a stay for the location (you get the park to yourself in the morning and evening outside of visitor opening times) but we were 2 nights which was enough. Full moon tour is a must if you are there at the right time.

But... check-in was a bit of a hassle and incredibly time consuming, getting anywhere (town or Argentinian side etc) is pretty expensive so you really rely on the hotel for everything. And it really frustrated us that you had to pay quite a lot for water other than 2 little bottles left in your room each evening - especially when so hot and humid - and given the price of the room, larger/more or indeed all complimentary water is hardly going to bankrupt them!

So all in all, a lovely hotel and the staff are lovely, but if we did it again, we would spend one night here, and one in town on the Argentinian side.

If you are creating your own `bucket list` then place this hotel at the top. Its charm and character embrace you as an old and dear friend with staff so attentive yet discrete that you forget you are not the only guests. Add to this the most awe inspiring location with the majestic falls a stones throw away and you may begin to believe in heaven on earth. Forget the expense...you will not be disappointed.

Classic style, very exclusive. For sure, not the cheapest hotel, but it is worth every Real. Great service. And even the pageboy speaks a perfect Oxford english. The front desk and the concierge organize everything on your request. You can book packages including park attractions, but you can also book everything individually at the concierge. And the best: As a guest of this hotel you can walk through the park and to the falls early in the morning before it opens for the public and in the evening after it has closed. Plan one day to go to the Argentina side of the park, let a guide from the hotel bring you there and join you the whole day, he knows best which places to go and when it is less crowded.

Room Tip: Some rooms are with a view to the falls. Ask when booking.

Great location inside the park just next to the falls!!!
beautiful view from the suites on the 2nd floor.
quiet pool with amazing cocktails; as most of the people stay only here for 1 or 2 nights, the pool is not too busy and perfect for a morning dip or for a dip after a day of walking.

Buffet food in the evening was nice.

We were in Brazil for 3 weeks and this hotel was the highlight of our trip!very romantic too to be in an old building.

DO NOT USE the services of the agency inside the hotel if possible; the guide we had was really not professional, better you screen your guide before you plan a visit.
