“Very civilised oasis with a natural wonder of the world on the doorstep”
Reviewed 5 May 2009

After the tackiness of Foz do Iguacu, a city built on profits from the falls and day trips to Paraguay, the Cataratas Hotel is an oasis of civilsation. Even though it is currently undergoing major renovations by its new owners (who also own the Copacabana Palace in Rio), the work in no way compromised our stay. When it is finished, the hotel will be luxurious in the extreme.

The bedrooms have been beautifully done up, with fabrics reflecting the lush flora and vibrant colours of Brazil. No neutral hotel brown in sight, thankfully. As a family with children aged 11 and 10, we had two rooms at the end of a corridor, which could be shut off with an external door, making a kind of suite. It was perfect. The only discordant note in the rooms concerned the huge flat screen TVs, ostentatiously framed and facing the bed in each room. If you have better things to do than watch TV, you are inescapably left looking at a large black rectangle in a gilt frame. We would have preferred another botanical print, like the beautiful ones elsewhere. Minibar items are even more astronomically expensive than usual - including 300ml of still water for R$6.

Bathrooms are luxurious and sparkling - full of deliciously scented traditional Granado and Phebo products. In true Brazilian tradition, though, there are no baths - only showers. We liked the special children's bath robes - and the havianas (flip flops) which were provided, in the right size, for each of us.

The public areas of the hotel are generous and tasteful and the gardens are glorious - although there aren't as many coatis roaming around as there were 15 years or so ago. We particularly liked the pool, which is properly deep and surrounded by comfortable loungers. There is a poolside bar and periodically, we were offered skewers of fresh fruit by very attentive staff. The hotel's manager is obviously genuinely interested in guests' views too - he responded very promptly to comments in our customer survey form.

Although only the poolside restaurant was open, the food - whether buffet or a la carte - was of a consistently high standard. Breakfast was sumptuous, with everything you could possibly think of on offer.

The biggest advantage offered by the hotel, however, is free access to the park before the hordes arrive. Two mornings in a row, we stood alone on a viewing platform and looked out over Iguacu Falls - which are surely one of the wonders of the natural world - ringed with rainbows in the early mroning sun and we had the place to ourselves. It was magical.

We stayed at this hotel during it's renovations. It is a beautiful old style of building , quite elegant in areas if you like all the dark heavy wood pannelling and beams. I think we were the first guests in our newly refurbished room and it was clean, comfortable and airy despite there only being a small window. The bathroom was well set out with a huge shower with seat. Work was continuing in adjoining rooms in our wing so there was a strong smell of paint , varnish etc at all times and a lot of noise and workman, they started at a reasonable hour though and finished at 5 pm. There were also interruptions to power and hot water supply on a very regular basis. Sadly the bar and meals area out by the beautiful pool were still being renovated and so no services were available at the pool.
The lobby, restaurant and bar areas in the front of the hotel were all functioning but service for drinks and afternoon tea was very slow. There only appeared to be two bar staff to look after several tour groups and other guests filling in a rainy afternoon. We waited an hour for our second drink and gave up. The beautiful view including glimpses of the falls from the verandah kept us there that long.
The buffet dinner and breakfasts were very good.
There is free internet service.
The feature of this hotel is it's location. As it is within the park guests are free to walk the path to the falls or wander around the forest paths and hotel grounds without the hordes of visitors before 9am and after 5pm. The falls are spectacular and the tranquility of the location outside park hours makes for a wonderful relaxing stay. On a 6.30 am walk we spotted a number of birds and an interesting looking animal, not a coati, of which there are a large number in the park and even some that come into the hotel grounds.
When the hotel is back in full working order it will be a wonderful place to stay and enjoy one of the most spectacular natural spots I've been too.

Just returned from an amazing stay with our 8 and 16 y/o daughters. We were not expecting the incredible experience we had at this hotel based on the rating and some of the earlier reviews. What an amazing place! It's absolutely beautiful, our rooms were gorgeous and looked right over the falls. Ongoing renovations were no bother. Incredible sunset views from the tower, warm friendly staff, gorgeous pool, coati toucans and butterflies everywhere. Did I mention the falls? Rafting into the waterfall was thrilling! We were the only ones there in the early morning, and on the magical hike in at 8 am we were greeted by all of the creatures above and also saw some small capybara-like things. Food was fine, breakfast included. We were charmed.

The rooms of this hotel may have not been up to standard in the past but you should see them now. Beautifully decorated, wooden floors, air conditioned, flat screen tvs, walk in shower.
I think that all rooms should be refurbished by mid 2009. There was only one restaurant open offering an expensive set menu with average food but you could get good snacks and sandwiches in the bar. The second restaurant near the new swimming pool is still being built. Make sure to take an early morning walk to the falls before the park opens. It is a fantastic experience and you will see wildlife such as racoons and tucans.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Visited Foz de Iguacu in March 2008 for 3 day/ 2 nights.

Location: AMAZING – the hotel has an uninterrupted view of the Brazilian side of the falls and is the only hotel located inside the park (on the Brazilian side). We had a standard/basic room and somehow we ended up with a room with a direct view of the falls – very lucky!

Food: Breakfast was in the main dining room which had all the windows & doors open, which added to atmosphere, but unfortunately most of the cheese & fruit was covered in little bugs – Yuck, not very pleasant.
On the first night we had dinner in the dinning room which was very average and the service was hap hazard.
On the second night we had dinner at the pool side BBQ – which was OUTSTANDING! There was an excellent selection of food, a great location and good service. The only issue was the price, from memory around $75 US dollars each – Very expensive. But it was worth experiencing for one dinner.

Reception: Staff friendly, informative and helpful

Rooms: Very old, very dated and most of the furniture looked like it would break if touched. But everything was clean and functional – big plus! Also at night the bathroom had lots of little bugs around the basin.

Overall the hotel rooms needs a big face lift, we were told that the hotel had recently changed hands and was now owned by the Orient Express group who were doing a major overhaul of the rooms, which I think if it happens will make this hotel amazing. But what we appreciated the most was the amazing location of the hotel and that the falls were literally two steps outside the front of the hotel which we believe was worth the money.

The hotel looks very nice from the outside and offers great views of the falls: location is its best asset. Inside it' s rundown, especially considering its steep price. After finding us invaded by a moltitude of little bugs the first morning we asked to change room. The second night we got a bugless room, which was good, but as ugly as the first one. Really cheap looking: not acceptable considering the price you pay. Nice breakfast.

The hotel is very expensive, but if you want to stay in the park, this is the only option in Brazil. I got up early one morning, and walked down the trail to the falls. I didn't pass one person. I don't think tourists are allowed into the park until 9 am or so. This experience was wonderful, and is only available to hotel guests.

Other than that experience, the hotel is very overrated for the price. We spent Christmas at the hotel, where we had to pay for an obligatory Christmas dinner at a ridiculous rate. The hotel is very dated, and needs a major overhaul, not the minor overhaul that they're currently undertaking. Our rooms had a lot of bugs at night, which is when the critters seem to come out. We even found a lizard living somewhere in the room. We're from the States, where those things tend to bother us.

I have heard that the Sheraton on the Argentina side is a better option. There's more to do on the Argentina side of the falls; the hike to the waterfall edge is spectacular. The hiking is better organized on the Argentina side.

As for the bugs, I didn't see one mosquito in the park during our stay, although we doused ourselves with mosquito repellent since there were reports of yellow fever (we weren't innoculated).
